Future of Asia talks focus of delegation's visit to Japan (21-05-2009) HA NOI — Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and a high-ranking Government delegation will leave for Tokyo today for a working visit and to attend the three-day conference, Future of Asia. Dung's visit follows Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh's visit to Japan last month. Both countries have said they are developing a strategic partnership for Asian peace and prosperity. Since Viet Nam and Japan established diplomatic ties in 1973, high-level meetings between the countries have been held annually. The two sides have also established a mechanism for dialogue at different levels. Japan is one of Viet Nam's most important economic partners. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung arrived in Tokyo on Thursday evening, starting his four-day official visit to Japan to further boost bilateral ties. The visit, which is made at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, is aimed at enhancing the strategic partnership between the two countries and strengthen their coordination at regional and international forums. Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Hiroshi Fukada, Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Doan Xuan Hung, and representatives of the Vietnamese community in the country welcomed PM Dung at the Tokyo airport. Japan is the first in the group of most industrialized nations (G7) to recognize Vietnam's full market economy status in October 2011. PM Nguyen Tan Dung visit's to Japan affirmed that Vietnam attached importance in the strategic partnership with Japan with an aim to promote the relations between the two countries. During the visit, leaders from the two countries will exchange ideas on how to increase cooperation in the political, security, economic, official development assistance (ODA), tourism, cultural and educational sectors; and they will discuss specific commitments in the implementation of joint-projects. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung who led the delegation made the affirmation during an interview with VOV upon his return to Hanoi from Osaka on October 22, concluding his official visit to Japan at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.Mr Dung said he and Japanese leaders reached high consensus on various areas to foster bilateral ties. To boost bilateral trade exchanges, Mr Dung said Vietnam and Japan agreed to begin negotiations on the Vietnam-Japan Free Trade Agreement soon and speed up the implementation of the second phase of the Vietnam-Japan Joint Initiative to improve Vietnam’s investment environment. They pledged to raise two-way trade value to US$15 billion by 2010 from the current US$8.5 billion.
