Cao Van Ly, 65, was arrested to be investigated for resisting law enforcement, police of Vinh Phuc's Vinh Tuong District said Tuesday. On Sunday last week, a police team of five was patrolling in Hoang Xa Village at around 2:20 p.m. when they signaled for Ly to stop his car for an alcohol check. Upon getting closer to the team, Ly made a U-turn with his car and attempted to drive in the direction of Tuan Chinh Village, local media reported. Police officers then approached the car and requested it to return. Ly then got off the car and explained that he was going the wrong way. When the police requested Ly to back off his car to the side of the road, Ly locked his car door and continued to drive towards the direction where the officers were standing. One police officer had to jump on the car’s hood and held onto it to avoid impact. Ly then drove for another two km, entered Quang Cu Village and hit a motorbike, causing its rider to fall onto the road. South Korean court orders state to compensate Vietnamese woman for Vietnam War massacre
Nguyen Thi Thanh, who said that she was a survivor of the mass killing of about 70 people in Phong Nhat - Phong Nhi Village in the central province of Quang Nam in 1968 by South Korean marines, filed a damages suit against the South Korean government in 2020, seeking ₩30 million as compensation. Thanh said she lost her family members and received gunshot injuries during the incident, the Yonhap News Agency reported. The Seoul Central District Court on Tuesday ruled in favor of Thanh, ordering the state to compensate her the aforementioned amount of money, plus interests. While the South Korean government argued that it was immune to the damages suit filed by a Vietnamese due to an agreement signed between Vietnam, South Korea and the U.S., the court rejected the argument. It also rejected another claim that the South Korean marines’ involvement in the murder has not been clearly proven, or that it was justifiable in the context of the war. Thanh said she was "tremendously … [Read more...] about South Korean court orders state to compensate Vietnamese woman for Vietnam War massacre
Earthquake kills more than 5,000 in Turkey, Syria
Rescuers in Turkey and Syria braved frigid weather, aftershocks and collapsing buildings Tuesday, as they dug for survivors buried by an earthquake that killed more than 5,000 people. Disaster agencies said several thousand buildings were flattened in cities across a vast border region -- pouring misery on an area already plagued by war, insurgency, refugee crises and a recent cholera outbreak. Through the night, survivors used their bare hands to pick over the twisted ruins of multi-storey apartment blocks -- trying to save family, friends and anyone else sleeping inside when the first massive 7.8-magnitude quake struck early Monday. "Where is my mum?" asked a distraught seven-year-old girl who was pulled -- her face, hair and pyjamas covered in dust -- from a collapsed building in Hatay, on the Turkish side of the border. Police officer Zekeriya Yildiz hugs his daughter after they saved her from the rubble in Hatay, southwest Turkey on February 6, 2023. The special art project aims to celebrate the 30th founding anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries this year. As heard at an October 12 press conference, the play's script was adapted by author Vu Thi Thu Phong from Duong Huong’s novel 'Ben khong chong' (Quay of the spinsters) which has been adapted to film several times. It is a joint work between the Vietnam National Drama Theatre and the Korea Association of Performing Arts Producers (KAPAP). The drama is set in Dong village, a typical rural village in the Northern Delta of Vietnam. Turkey-Syria quake toll tops 7,800 as rescuers battle cold
Tremors that inflicted more suffering on a border area, already plagued by conflict, left people on the streets burning debris to try to stay warm as international aid began to arrive. But some extraordinary survival tales have emerged, including a newborn baby pulled alive from rubble in Syria, still tied by her umbilical cord to her mother who died in Monday's quake. "We heard a voice while we were digging," Khalil al-Suwadi, a relative, told AFP. "We cleared the dust and found the baby with the umbilical cord (intact) so we cut it and my cousin took her to hospital." The infant is the sole survivor of her immediate family, the rest of whom were killed in the rebel-held town of Jindayris. The 7.8-magnitude quake struck Monday as people slept, flattening thousands of structures, trapping an unknown number of people and potentially impacting millions. Whole rows of buildings collapsed, leaving some of the heaviest devastation near the quake's epicentre between the Turkish … [Read more...] about Turkey-Syria quake toll tops 7,800 as rescuers battle cold
Forest peach blossoms bloom all over Mu Cang Chai
Forest peach blossoms in the Hmong language are called " to day." According to Vang A Thao, a tour guide at Mu Cang Chai, the flowers usually bloom at the end of December of the lunar calendar. This year, due to changes in weather, the flowers bloomed nearly a month later than usual. Peach flowers in Mu Cang Chai bloom the most in La Pan Tan Commune, and Trong Tong and Trong Pao Sang villages. The forest peach blossoms can also be found in other places, such as Thao Chua Chai Village, Che Cu Nha Commune, Mi Hang Village, Mo De Commune, and Lao Chai Commune.
