Projects to convert exhausting forests into rubber plantations fail
Rubber trees in Ia Pnon Commune of Quang Duc Company are dead and underdeveloped. (Photo: SGGP) Mass death of rubber trees Since 2008, Gia Lai Province has permitted about 16 enterprises to carry out 44 projects to grow rubber on poor natural forest land with a total area of more than 32,000 hectares. Of which, the rubber tree area is more than 25,500ha. However, after planting, rubber trees died in mass. Visiting a rubber plantation converted from exhausting forests of Quang Duc Company in Ia Pnon Commune, we witnessed that many rubber areas had died. On other hills, rubber trees are still alive but stunted. Although rubber trees have been grown for more than ten years, their trunks are only as big as a bicep. According to an official of Ia Pnon Commune, at first, the project was carried out by another unit and later handed over to Quang Duc Company. Among 850 hectares converted to rubber plantations of the project, about 100 hectares remain, but the rubber trees are … [Read more...] about Projects to convert exhausting forests into rubber plantations fail

Vimico raises environmental awareness
Improved production, business efficiency Vimico adheres rigorously to the Law on Environmental Protection. In mineral mining, the corporation applies technology selectively to enrich primary ores, and thoroughly recover metallic minerals. As a result, it can both reduce resource loss and improve environmental protection efficiency by not leaving metal ores that pollute soil, rock and water sources, reducing the volume of ore transport and dust generated during the transportation process. At the same time, it maintains the watering mode to limit generated dust on mining routes. The corporation also plants trees to protect the environment … [Read more...] about Vimico raises environmental awareness
Vietnamese farmers downbeat over tumbling Thai jackfruit prices
The farm gate prices for Thai jackfruit in Vietnam's Mekong Delta have dropped by VND2,000-3,000 (8-12 U.S. cents) per kilogram, but farmers are still struggling to find buyers, forcing many to leave jackfruits piling up in their gardens or use the crop as animal feed. Hoang Van Linh, a resident of Cai Lay District of Tien Giang Province, said his garden is full of ripe jackfruits, but traders simply are not interested. Linh has resorted to giving the harvest to family and friends. He switched from growing durians to jackfruits in 2016 when saltwater intrusion began affecting his growing operation. Now, with durians selling for VND40,000-50,000 ($1.7-2) per kilogram, he regrets the decision. “The Thai jackfruit trees on my farm are bursting with ripe fruits, but no one wants them,” complained Nguyen Van Tu, another farmer in Cai Lay District. Three years ago, when jackfruit prices were at VND40,000 per kilogram, Tu’s family was able to earn about VND5 million ($215) per … [Read more...] about Vietnamese farmers downbeat over tumbling Thai jackfruit prices
