Saigon medics break their back to track Covid-19

It had taken just 30 minutes for Cong, deputy head of the laboratory and diagnostic imaging department at the Binh Thanh District medical center, to finish preparing swabbing kits, protective clothing and necessary documents. It was still dark as the 36-year-old Cong, along with four colleagues, began conducting random Covid-19 tests in areas around the Mien Dong (Eastern Region) Bus Station in Saigon for the 12th day. From 5 a.m. to 7 a.m., they worked with local medics to take 100 samples of people from Hanoi and the provinces of Gia Lai, Kon Tum and Dak Lak in the Central Highlands. One of them took the samples to the Thu Duc Hospital for carrying out RT-PCR tests. Some received people coming from Covid-19 hotspots to check their medical declarations and take their swab samples. Others traveled to two quarantine facilities in Wards 21 and 28 to take swab samples of those under centralized quarantine. After a long day, at around 6 p.m., they started traveling with medics in the district to take random swab samples at local restaurants. It was midnight when the medics returned to their office yet again. The team members have been traveling from place to place and working around the clock for a month, Cong said they initially collected test samples at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport; and after an infection chain was found, they moved on to locked down neighborhoods and worked with the residents there. In collecting samples at bus stations, they had to work from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m., said Ho Minh Hoang, head of the medical center in Binh Thanh District’s Ward 26. Thailand, Philippines confirm many new COVID-19 cases

Of the domestic cases, 49 were recorded in the outbreak in Samut Sakhon. No new infections were confirmed in Bangkok. The same day, Thailand started its COVID-19 vaccination roll-out, with the first shot, using China's Sinovac vaccine, going to Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Thailand has so far recorded 25,951 COVID-19 cases, including 23,181 domestic infections and 2,770 imported cases. A total of 25,128 patients have recovered, while 740 others are still being treated at hospitals. The death toll stands at 83. Meanwhile, the Philippines found 2,113 more COVID infections on the same day, lifting its national count to 576,352. The number of deaths related to COVID-19 in the country has increased to 12,318, after an additional 29 patients died in the past 24 hours. The Southeast Asian country has tested more than 8 million out of about 110 million people since the COVD-19 outbreak in January last year. COVID-19: Vietnam records 12 more community cases on Feb. 28

Most of the newly-detected patients tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus after coming into close contact with COVID-19 patients. Six of the cases were recorded in Hai Duong’s Kim Thanh district, a new coronavirus hotspot in the country. The virus has spread to all 12 cities and districts in Hai Duong province, with 665 cases confirmed, since it recurred a month ago. Elsewhere, the epidemic has been brought under control in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi capital, Hai Phong city as well as 12 other localities, with no new cases detected during the past few days. Bac Lieu province in the Mekong Delta reported an infection in the community on February 28 and local authorities are awaiting confirmation from the Ho Chi Minh City Pasteur Institute. The same day, the Ministry of Health announced four imported cases in Tay Ninh and Dong Thap provinces in southern Vietnam. Thirty two patients were also discharged from hospital on the same day after making a full recovery from the disease. The number of quarantined people who had contact with COVID-19 patients or returned from epidemic hit countries has also fallen to 63,000. Among active cases, an elderly patient in Da Nang city, central Vietnam, is in critical condition and has been relying on ECMO, a sophisticated therapy to save patients in critical condition.
