Vietnam’s economy growing faster
Vietnam’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth expanded at 4.12 percent in the second quarter of 2023, well above the 3.28-percent increase in the previous quarter, given gradual rebounds in multiple sectors. The figures were detailed in a report on socio-economic performance presented by the Ministry of Planning and Investment at a session held by the National Assembly Economic Committee on Wednesday morning. Besides, Standard Chartered Bank forecasts the Southeast Asian nation will achieve GDP growth of 5.1 percent in the third quarter, up nearly one percentage point over the second quarter. Singapore lender United Overseas Bank (UOB) made a higher forecast for Vietnam’s GDP growth at 5.6 percent in the July-September period. The lender also predicts a 7.6-percent expansion in the fourth quarter for the Vietnamese economy. A conference for experts from Germany and Vietnam to analyze and discuss the potential of Vietnam’s just energy for local economic and labor growth took place in Hanoi on Wednesday. The “Just Energy Transition = Job Accelerator for Vietnam? German-Vietnamese perspectives on employment and skills needs,” hosted by the German Embassy in Hanoi on Wednesday, attracted nearly 200 delegates and 300 private attendees, according to press release issued by the embassy. “Just energy transition” typically refers to financing mechanisms that allow developed countries to fund clean energy initiatives in fossil fuel-dependent developing countries. Site clearance delays road construction in Dong Nai
Work on the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway between the beach city of Vung Tau and the industrial city of Bien Hoa in Dong Nai Province began in June. But contractors have yet to receive cleared land to build the expressway in Dong Nai. Slated to cost around VND18 trillion (US$755.67 million) in total, the expressway will run 53.7 km in Ho Chi Minh City and 34 km in Dong Nai before reaching Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province. In Ba Ria – Vung Tau, 80% of site clearance has been completed, while in Dong Nai progress has reached just 6%. Nguyen Hong Que, deputy director of the board that is in charge of site clearance and compensation for the expressway in Dong Nai, said 290 hectares still need to be cleared to serve the project. Of 3,700 houses that need to be removed, many were built illegally, and their owners do not have official house ownership certificates.
