Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh focused on Vietnam’s economic development policy based on independence, self-reliance, and international integration in his speech at Harvard Kennedy School in the U.S. on Saturday. PM Chinh visited the school and attended a policy powwow as part of his trip to the U.S. and participation in the U.S. - ASEAN Special Summit from May 11 to 17, at the invitation of U.S. President Joe Biden. PM Pham Minh Chinh visited New York Stock Exchange
PM Chinh expressed his delight at visiting the NYSE, the largest stock exchange in the world in terms of market capitalisation, and rang the iconic Closing Bell. Some of the Vietnamese conglomerates are considering offering their shares on foreign exchanges, particularly the NYSE, in order to scale up their financial soundness. In April, Vingroup’s automobile arm VinFast submitted its application for an initial public offering to the US Securities Exchange Commission. PM Chinh also attended the awarding ceremony between Vietnam and the US to further strengthen bilateral relations in various fields, including finance, banking, and investment funds. Vietnam’s State Securities Commission and the NYSE have inked a cooperation agreement to facilitate Vietnam’s forthcoming market upgrade and provide a mechanism for investors to engage in both stock markets. PM Pham Minh Chinh meets with USAID Administrator
At the meeting, PM Chinh highly appreciated USAID's contributions to the recent development of Vietnam-U.S. relations through effective aid activities, contributing to the settlement of post-war consequences, hunger eradication and poverty alleviation, and promotion of sustainable and inclusive development in Vietnam. The PM welcomed USAID's plan to expand operations in Vietnam, speed up approval procedures and implement projects to increase the effectiveness of development aid. He made the statement at a meeting with the U.S. business community in Washingon D.C on May 12 (local time), as part of his trip to the U.S. The meeting was held by the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, during which he also affirmed that Vietnam always considers the U.S. a leading partner. He said the impressive growth of trade of between 17-20 percent a year proves that there remains an ample room for economic development between the two countries. Vietnam is the ninth largest trading partner of the U.S. Two-way trade turnover between the two countries in 2021 reached nearly 112 billion USD in spite of difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the PM noted.
