April 22, 2018 | 01:06 pm GMT+7 Two dragon boats practicing to race on a river in China have overturned and 17 people drowned, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Sunday. Television pictures showed one of the long, narrow boats packed with paddlers going over on Saturday on a stretch of a river near the city of Guilin where the current appeared to be strong. Another dragon boat arrived at the scene, also full of paddlers, and it too capsized, the pictures showed. Xinhua said 57 people had gone into the water and 200 rescuers were sent to help. The rescue effort went on late into the night. The accident happened where two flows of the river converge causing a powerful current, the CCTV broadcaster said. Most of those who went into the river were not wearing life jackets, media reported. Two people had been detained in connection with the accident, Xinhua said. The fourth "Dragon Boat Races" will begin on May 25 near the Chau Doc Sports Center and Victoria Hotels and Resorts to promote Chau Doc as a destination for local and foreign tourists. The Dragon Boat Races are held annually as part of the Lady Xu Festival and take place on the Bassac River from the Chau Doc Basa Fish Park to the Victoria Chau Doc Hotel. Around 15 teams will compete this year. The races will take place at the April 30 Park - Basa Park from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m with prizes of up to VND2 million (US$125). Later, guests can join the biggest festival in Chau Doc, the Lady Xu Festival, which is held annually at Lady Xu Temple from 23rd day to the 27th day of the fourth lunar month, or May 27-31 this year. The washing of the statue is the main event of the festival. Chau Doc dragon boat race to kick off By Thuy Nguyen in HCMC Victoria Hotels & Resorts will run its 5th "Dragon Boat Races" at Victoria Chau Doc Hotel on May 15 in collaboration with the Chau Doc Sports Center, to promote Chau Doc as a destination for local and foreign tourists. The Dragon Boat Races are held annually in celebration of the Chau Doc Lady Xu Festival and takes place on the Bassac River from the Chau Doc Basa Fish Park to just past the Victoria Chau Doc Hotel. Around 20 teams from neighboring areas such as Phu Tan, Chau Phu, An Phu, Tan Chau districts, Chau Doc town of An Giang Province, Dong Thap Province and Can Tho City will compete in the race in 3 categories: 500, 700 and 1000-meter races in team of 10 athletes and team of 20 athletes for male, and 10 athletes for female.
