Old downtown market to relocate next year
Uyen Vien Authorities of District 1 and Ben Nghe Ward where the market is located announced in June last year that some time this year they would relocate the market that occupies a section of Ton That Dam Street in District 1. However, vendors have proposed giving them more time to prepare, so the authorities have decided to let them have one more year to move. Vo Quoc Hung, vice chairman of Ben Nghe Ward, told the Daily early this week that a plan to relocate the spontaneously-formed markets throughout the city, including Ton That Dam Street market, had been approved by the city government. Financial support for vendors at Ton That Dam market cannot be publicized for now, Hung added. Since the year's beginning, the district and ward authorities have yet to have meetings with the affected vendors. Flowers flood city markets ahead of Tet (24-01-2006) People in major cities like HCM City and Ha Noi planning to buy flowers and bonsai to decorate their homes this Tet (the Lunar New Year) are likely to be spoiled for choice. Not only are flower markets being set up especially for Tet but they are also stocked with exotic orchids and bonsai, and even imported flowers. Early on Sunday morning four of them opened in HCM City at the September 23 and Le Van Tam parks in District 1, Gia Dinh Park in Go Vap District, and Sai Gon South New Urban Area in District 7. The September 23 Park market is the biggest with some 700 shops. Gia Dinh has 200 and Le Van Tam over 60. Green Tree and Parks Company, which manages the city's parks, said the number of stalls at this year's markets had increased by 150 per cent over the 2005 figure. Besides, floral and bonsai shops in the city had begun stocking up a large variety a week ago for Tet, the company said. Making them requires sticky rice, green bean, pork and some special ingredients like the la dong leaf. The leaf, though not eaten along with the cake, is wrapped around a layer each of the rice, green bean paste, and pork. La dong is found aplenty in HCM City before the Lunar New Year - in an impromptu market along Cach Mang Thang Tam Street in Tan Binh District. Locals call this section of street La Dong Ong Ta Market and it only opens 10 days before Tet. No one knows for sure how long this market has been there.
