Vietnam – one of top 20 countries for Internet users
Along with six other Asian countries, Vietnam has been listed among the top 20 countries in the world with the highest numbers of Internet users. This is the result of a survey by Pingdom, which provides website and server supervising services to worldwide organizations and businesses. According to the survey, "Internet World Status", though the world's population exceeds six billion, only 1.8 billion people have Internet access and only 32 countries have over 10 million Internet users. Notably, the top ten countries account for 65 percent of the world's total number of Internet users, with 1.17 billion. The Top 20 countries make up 1.47 billion users, or 82 percent. Internet users worldwide surpass 2 billion in 2010
2010 will see the number of Internet users top two billion globally before year's end. International Telecom Union (ITU) revealed the figures in its latest statistics - The World in 2010: ICT facts and figures. The statistics show that the number of Internet users has doubled between 2005 and 2010. In 2010, the number of Internet users will surpass the two billion mark. Of those users, 1.2 billion will be in developing countries. While 71% of the population in developed countries are online, only 21% of the population in developing countries are online. By the end of 2010, Internet user penetration in Africa will reach 9.6%, far behind both the world average (30%) and the developing country average (21%). With more than 420 million Internet users, China is the largest Internet market in the world. Statistics set alarm bells ringing about Internet users
It’s a fact that Vietnamese people are on track to approach modernisation and industrialisation. However, the Internet is not well accessible across the country. It has become popular among younger people, but only in urban areas. It is also reported that out of the 23 percent of Internet users, only 1.4 percent searched for information relating to their jobs and studies. Meanwhile, 62 percent of them, mostly young, only played online games or searched for other forms of entertainment. Quite a few public employees were also interested in playing online games or entering “black” websites during their office hours. Similarly, 70 percent of Internet users had their own blogs. There have been warnings of children leaving school for online games which endanger their health and can lead to serious injuries. Vietnam ranks 18th in the world top 20 countries using the internet, with over 30 percent of its population surfing the worldwide web.
