In 2021, the cigar and cigarette manufacturer and importer treated about 6,400cu.m of wastewater in the six septic tanks it built to handle domestic wastewater by biological methods. However, due to its location in a residential area, the wastewater from restaurants and households is also discharged into the company's sewage system, putting further pressure on it. Emissions and dust generated during production undergoes filtration and is then retained and collected in sacks. The company’s central vacuum cleaner system has been certified by the Environment Department of Bac Ninh Province. Tightly controlling waste sources Company director Le Van Xuan said the company discharges three types of waste: solid, industrial and hazardous waste. Solid waste comprises waste paper, used office utensils, canteen waste, domestic waste and non-hazardous industrial waste. The company has signed a contract with the People’s Committee of Na Duong Town for waste collection, classification, transportation and treatment. Normal industrial solid waste (ashes and cinders) is transported by specialized vehicles to the 9.6ha Na Duoi dumping ground, about 2.5-3km away from residential areas and the company’s factory. In 2019, the Vietnam Institute for Building Science and Technology (IBST) certified that the company’s ashes and cinders were eligible for use as ground filling materials. Foreign groups battle to retain their workers
Inadequacies in salary are causing a shift of workers among foreign-invested enterprises. Taiwanese-backed Foxconn, the world’s largest iPhone contract manufacturer, is complaining about a battle to attract more affordable labour with its Chinese rivals in Vietnam. Young Liu, CEO and chairman of Foxconn, this month accused the company’s Chinese competitors of setting up campuses near its base in Vietnam to get closer to its workers. Foxconn’s campus, located in the northern province of Bac Ninh, currently employs around 60,000 workers, and the company has plans to increase that number over the next two years. Once the battle for workers becomes more serious, the company may face the risk of employee shortages.
