However, knocking other rivals out of the competition is heavily dependent on technology application, brand building, and sustainable development. Farmers in Tay Ninh province, the country’s largest custard apple producer, have switched over 3,400 hectare of low-yield cassava, sugarcane and rubber fields to grow longan, grape fruit, durian and custard apple. They are growing the fruit to good agricultural practice (GAP) standards such as VietGAP and Global GAP to meet the market demand and improve farmers’ incomes. In 2011 the National Office of Intellectual Property granted geographical indication (GI) certification for Ba Den custard apple, helping improve the image of the province’s fruit at home and abroad. Additionally, the province is focusing its attention on building brands for green-skinned grapefruit, mango and jackfruit whose origin can be traced back thanks to technology application. Meantime, 21 cooperatives and over 100 cooperative groups are growing … [Read more...] about Southeastern provinces take heed of brand building for agricultural products

Da Nang considers railway station relocation plan again after 15 years
Da Nang railway station now stands in the center of the city. Photo by Nguyen Dong. The central city first brought out the plan to relocate the Da Nang Railway Station westward to Lien Chieu District from the central district of Thanh Khe in 2004. After many discussions, the plan fell through. The long delay and uncertainty has upset a lot of residents. "This delay isn't good for the people here. They can't build houses. They can't give their land to their children. We need a concrete solution from the city," resident Huynh Su said at a meeting with Da Nang’s Party chief Truong Quang Nghia on Tuesday. Nghia said the relocation had been stalled due to the lack of funding. But some investors have expressed interest in the project recently. Therefore, the city plans to revive it and collaborate with the Ministry of Transport to select a new location for the station in 2020. He said the city now wants to relocate the station to a different place than Lien Chieu because it was no … [Read more...] about Da Nang considers railway station relocation plan again after 15 years
Poor diets damaging global and Vietnamese children’s health: UNICEF
An alarmingly high number of children are suffering the consequences of poor diets and a food system that is failing them, UNICEF warned Wednesday in a new report on children, food and nutrition globally. The State of the World’s Children 2019: Children, Food and Nutrition finds that globally at least one in three children under five – or over 200 million – is either undernourished or overweight. Almost two in three children between six months and two years of age are not fed food that supports their rapidly growing bodies and brains. This puts them at risk of poor brain development, weak learning, low immunity, increased infections and, in many cases, death. “Despite all the technological, cultural and social advances of the last few decades, we have lost sight of this most basic fact: if children eat poorly, they live poorly,” said Henrietta Fore, UNICEF executive director. “Millions of children across the world subsist on an unhealthy diet because … [Read more...] about Poor diets damaging global and Vietnamese children’s health: UNICEF
Vinamilk hit by not-so-fresh milk accusations
Vinamilk was accused of breaking its fresh milk promise on social media Earlier this month, a Facebook account posted a status with pictures it claimed were customs data of Vinamilk’s raw materials imports, most of which is skimmed milk powder. The account also assumed that Vinamilk uses these ingredients to produce “fresh milk”, questioning the quality of Vinamilk's fresh milk and pointing out that the “Shake well before use” instruction has been a permanent fixture on the milk bottles. Another Facebook user claimed that Vinamilk's "pure fresh milk" is actually reconstituted milk which consists of about 20 per cent of fresh milk, while the remainder is milk powder, butter, and additives. These added ingredients are not soluble in fresh milk, therefore, after a certain time they will be precipitated. That is why consumers must "shake well before use". The user also mentioned other fresh milk products from different brands on the market that do not … [Read more...] about Vinamilk hit by not-so-fresh milk accusations
