She was once the smallest baby born in Texas. Now, she works in the NICU of the hospital that saved her life When Tammy Lewis was born, she was 3½ months early and weighed in at only 1 pound 4 ounces. Her family faced the harsh reality their newborn's survival rate was 5-10%. Tammy Lewis was 1 pound, 4 ounces at birth. But Lewis beat the odds and now, 34 years later, she works in the same NICU that saved her life. "I was the smallest surviving baby in the state of Texas, at the time," Lewis said. "I was born at 24 weeks. Normal gestation is 40 weeks." According to the Ministry of Education and Training’s regulations, educational facilities must have medical rooms; however, many schools cannot expand nursing coverage or are cutting it down. There's been a lot of controversy about whether schools should have health rooms or clinics nearby to take care of students’ health. As per the Prime Minister’s instruction No. 23/2006/CT-TTg issued in July, 2006 on the healthcare in schools, the Ministry of Education and Training has implemented measures and recruit more nurses in schools. However, there has no change in health-related tasks in schools with just half of schools having a medical room and half of schools having nurses. Just 55 percent of schools in the country keep students’ medical record and nurses in schools . Most schools just encourage parents to buy health insurance for their children.
