The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) will negotiate with Chinese authorities to allow goods to pass through hitherto unused border gates in the northern province of Lang Son, like Chi Ma, Na Hinh and Binh Nghi, in order to resolve congestion at the Tan Thanh border gate, said Tran Thanh Hai, deputy director of the ministry’s Import and Export Department. On Wednesday morning, in a meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Vietnam Xiong Bo and Yunnan Province’s Party Committee Deputy Secretary Wang Yobo, Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue had mentioned the difficulties Vietnamese exporters have been facing at the border, and asked China to help resolve the issue. South Korean firm seeks majority stake in Vietnam’s Mercedes-Benz dealer
In a Tuesday press release Haxaco said it has set up a team to negotiate the offer from The Class Hyosung, also a Mercedes-Benz dealer. The Class Hyosung has offered to pay VND45,500 ($1.96) per share for the stake, while Haxaco wants VND50,000 ($2.16). The announcement increased Haxaco’s HAX stock value on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange by 6.7 percent from Monday to VND19,050 (82 cents) Tuesday. Haxaco’s management board began looking at legal requirements to increase the foreign ownership cap in the company from 49 percent to 100 percent in August. The increase is set to be presented to shareholders for approval. Haxaco posted revenues of VND2.3 trillion ($99.3 million) in the first half of 2019, with car sales accounting for 92 percent. Vietnam set to welcome 18 million foreign visitors this year
The number of foreigners visiting Vietnam in the first 11 months of this year is estimated at 16.3 million, a record high, up 15.3 percent from a year ago, according to the General Statistics Office. Most visitors arrived by air, accounting for over 80 percent of the total, up 14 percent year-on-year. The tourism growth is mainly driven by Asian tourists who account for nearly 80 percent of total foreign arrivals. About 13 million Asians visited Vietnam in the January-November period, up 18 percent from a year ago. China remained the biggest source of visitors with more than five million traveling to Vietnam so far this year, up 15 percent year-on-year, accounting for more than 30 percent of all foreign arrivals. South Koreans came in second with nearly four million arrivals, surging 22.3 percent and accounting for nearly one fourth of the total. China and South Korea were Vietnam's top feeder markets last year with 4.9 million and 3.4 million visitors respectively. Vietnam slips one place in ease of doing business ranking
It slipped one place despite improving its overall score from 68.36 points last year to 69.8 this year, according to the World Bank's Ease of Doing Business 2020 report released Thursday. The report ranks 190 economies around the world based on 10 criteria: starting a business; dealing with construction permits; getting electricity; registering property; getting credit; protecting minority investors; paying taxes; trading across borders; enforcing contracts; and resolving insolvency. This year, Vietnam fared better than several Southeast Asian peers like Indonesia (73rd), the Philippines (95th), Cambodia (144th), Laos (154th) and Myanmar (165th). In Southeast Asia, Vietnam was ranked fifth after Singapore (2nd), Malaysia (12th), Thaialnd (21st) and Brunei (66th). Vietnam has been striving to improve its business environment in recent years. 2020 Asian Poker Tour to begin in Vietnam
There will be 12 events approximately a month apart played across Vietnam, Taiwan, the Philippines and South Korea. In Vietnam, two will be held at the Pro Poker Club in HCMC's District 3 from January 8 to 19 and June 3 to 14, and one at the Win Bridge & Poker Club in Da Nang from April 7 to 18. Taiwan, the Philippines and South Korea will each host two events. But several of the events, including the one in Da Nang, are still to be confirmed as are some venues. The venue for the APT finale in December is yet to be announced.
