North Korea lauded the military might built up by deceased leader Kim Jong-il on Thursday, likely tying his young successor to the same policies that have set Northeast Asia on edge as the impoverished state inches closer to nuclear weapons capability. SEOUL — North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un says his reclusive nation plans more "satellite launches" – which the West sees as a cover for ballistic missile tests – calling space exploration a "strategic goal," state media said Friday. "Conquering space is... a fierce class struggle against the hostile forces seeking to usurp our peace and sovereignty," Kim was quoted as saying at a Wednesday awards ceremony for those involved in this month's rocket launch. He also underscored the need to successfully launch "more working satellites," Pyongyang's KCNA news agency said. "The advance toward space... is the DPRK's (North Korea's) strategic goal," he said. Calling the scientists involved in the February 7 launch "best patriots and admirable heroes," Kim gave out medals, prizes and wristwatches bearing the names of the two late leaders of the Kim dynasty – Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il. North Korea sparked international outrage with the launch of the Kwangmyongsong-4 … [Read more...] about North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un calls for more rocket launches
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un blamed South Korea on Friday for increased mistrust in a New Year speech after a year of heightened tension between the rival countries. The speech was Kim's fourth since becoming leader in 2011 when his father, Kim Jong Il, died, sparking a long and turbulent succession process marked by several purges in the country. "South Korea has made a unilateral case for unification and increased mistrust and conflict between us," Kim said during a 30-minute long address, broadcast on North Korean television, highlighting its suspicion of the South's unification policies. Kim said in last year's speech he would be open to a summit with Seoul but tension surged in August after a landmine blast on their border wounded two South Korean soldiers. The South blamed the North which denied responsibility. The two sides met for talks in August after a sustained military stand-off and agreed to reduce tension and hold further talks at vice-ministerial level, … [Read more...] about North Korea’s Kim blames South for mistrust in New Year speech

North Korea's next dynastic succession may have been secured, with new TV images of leader Kim Jong-Un's wife suggesting that Pyongyang's first lady recently gave birth. When state TV showed Ri Sol-Ju attending a memorial service for her husband's late father Kim Jong-Il in mid-December, she appeared heavily pregnant with her loose-fit traditional dress barely hiding a swollen belly. But more recent images of her attending an official New Year's party showed her wearing a well-fitted two-piece skirt suit with no physical sign of pregnancy. Speculation was fuelled by the official performance, which included an all-woman band singing a version of the Christmas favourite "When a Child is Born" made popular by Johnny Mathis. South Korean television and newspapers on Thursday ran before-and-after photos with speculative captions. "The bulging stomach has gone down ... has Ri Sol-Ju given birth?" asked the Dong-A Ilbo daily. "Ri Sol-Ju with her tummy reduced in 11 days. Has she come … [Read more...] about An heir for North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un?
