Foreign women report being harassed by young men in Hanoi

Several foreign women have reported being sexually harassed by groups of teenage boys and young men in Hanoi. The municipal Department of Public Security confirmed on Thursday it had ordered local police units to promptly investigate the cases and impose harsh punishment upon the offenders. Officers in Quang An Ward, Tay Ho District previously received reports from four foreign women who said they had been insulted and sexually harassed by some groups of boys and young men ages around 15 to 20 traveling on motorbikes with hidden license plates. Three of the women were staying in Quang An Ward while the other in Tu Lien Ward, also in Tay Ho District. Local media added that some Vietnamese women had also been harassed by these individuals. The incidents took place near the West Lake from late January to February. Police are collecting statements from the victims and eyewitnesses, as well as examining CCTV footage in the area where the incidents took place. They are also searching for potential suspects and have warned the foreign community in the area of such a situation. Quang An Ward police have advised local residents and foreigners in the neighborhood to avoid going outside alone or going to secluded locations. Hanoi required to verify accusations of molestation toward foreigners in West Lake

The Hanoitimes - Local police are investigating the incidents shortly after the cases reported. Vietnam’s Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh has required Hanoi to verify signs of physical abuse toward foreign women after accusations have gone viral over the past few days. Photo: Zing Hanoi’s authorities need to have strict penalties to perpetrators of sexual harassment that has been reported on local media, according to the Government’s Office. The accusations were filed after a number of foreign women told local media and communities on social platforms, triggering indignation over the molestation that now targets to a wider range of victims. News on media shows that from late January to late February, a number of adolescents covering face with masks and riding on motorbikes with hidden plates committed sexual molestation to four foreign women who were strolling around West Lake, one of the most famous lakes in Hanoi where many expats reside. The abuse has somewhat threatened walking outside at night in that area of the city. Regarding the accusations, some embassies in Hanoi have warned their citizens of the situation. The US Embassy in Hanoi urged American citizens to be careful and consider traveling in groups when walking or jogging in that area. On March 4, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Chu Ngoc Anh asked the local police to investigate these incidents. The first batch comprising over 117,600 doses of the vaccine manufactured in the Republic of Korea (RoK), arrived in Việt Nam on February 24 . After holding working sessions with the producer, Việt Nam has obtained an accreditation certificate for the batch from the RoK. Long said the doses, verified by the ministry, met the conditions for vaccination in Việt Nam. On Saturday, the health minister will chair a conference to launch the vaccination plan and provide training for medical staff nationwide in the use and storage of the vaccine, as well as the handling of post-injection complications. According to the official, priority for vaccination will be given to people at the front line of the fight against COVID-19, including health, army, police, customs and immigration personnel; those working in sectors offering essential services like aviation, transport, tourism and education; people with chronic illnesses or above 65 years old; those living in pandemic-hit areas; the poor and beneficiaries of social welfare.
