Gas stations in southern Vietnam on verge of shutdown amid falling profits
Several fuel companies in An Giang Province, southern Vietnam have proposed closing gas stations due to falling profits, stoking fears of an impending fuel shortage. Though an adjustment made by the central government on Monday will fuel retailers to bring in profits of VND100-300 per liter of gasoline or oil, industry insiders fear such low commissions are not enough to keep gas stations afloat. “Gas stations can only yield enough profits to survive when they can rake in commissions of VND700-800 per liter. With current commissions, filling stations can only operate in moderation in order to retain customers, but they cannot earn profits,” said an executive from Petrolimex An Giang. “Gas stations with adequate supplies can continue to operate, but those without sufficient supplies may face a partial shortage." In Ho Chi Minh City, filling stations are facing a similar dilemma. According to the director of a filling station in the southern metropolis, the VND452 his company … [Read more...] about Gas stations in southern Vietnam on verge of shutdown amid falling profits
Vietnam’s industrial production to rise 6.6% in 2023: S&P Global
Industrial production is forecast to increase 6.6% in 2023. (Photo: VNA) HCM City (VNA) – Vietnam is predicted to record a rise of 6.6% in industrial production in 2023, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. S&P Global noted the Vietnamese manufacturing sector continued to face challenging business conditions in the opening month of 2023. Production and new orders continued to decline. That said, there were some signs of improvement in demand as new business fell at a softer pace, helped by a renewed expansion in new export orders. The S&P Global Vietnam Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), released on February 1, posted 47.4 in January, up from 46.4 in December but still pointing to a solid monthly deterioration in the health of the manufacturing sector. January data signalled a further marked decline in manufacturing production, albeit one that was slightly softer than seen in December. Lower new orders were often behind falling output, with … [Read more...] about Vietnam’s industrial production to rise 6.6% in 2023: S&P Global
Vietnam must step up carbon reduction to enter EU markets
Solar panels installed on the rooftops of a seafood processing plant in the Mekong Delta. (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNS/VNA) - Vietnam must start monitoring and issuing carbon certificates to exporters and retailers in response to the EU's recently passed carbon levy , said industry insiders and policymakers. The EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) by the European Parliament (EP), according to the EP, is to "put a fair price on the carbon emitted during the production of carbon-intensive goods that are entering the EU, and to encourage cleaner industrial production in non-EU countries." The bloc requires exporters to report their commodities' carbon footprints, on which a tax may be levied should carbon emissions during the production of said commodities exceed the EU's carbon regulations. Instead of buying the EU's carbon certificate , Vietnamese businesses could take steps to reduce their own carbon footprints during production, experts said. Decline in new orders slows: S&P Global
It said in a release: "There were some signs of improvement, particularly with regard to new export orders which rose for the first time in three months. As such, total new business fell at a modest pace that was the softest in the current period of decline." The S&P Global Vietnam Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index rose to 47.4 in January from 46.4 the previous month, but it still represented a solid deterioration in the health of the manufacturing sector. A PMI reading of above 50 indicates an expansion of the manufacturing sector compared to the previous month, while one below 50 represents a contraction. Operating conditions have now worsened in each of the past three months. Faster increases in input costs led manufacturers to raise their selling prices in January. Though modest, it was the steepest hike in six months. The rising cost of raw materials meant some firms reduced their purchasing activity again in January. But some signs of improvement in demand … [Read more...] about Decline in new orders slows: S&P Global
