Hanoi reveals design of new bridge crossing Red river

The Hanoitimes - This will be the ninth bridges in Hanoi crossing the Red river. Two designs for the Tran Hung Dao bridge that will span the Red river and connect Hanoi’s districts of Hoan Kiem and Long Bien have been revealed, local media reported. (TEDI) to study the construction of the Tran Hung Dao bridge, requiring the design to be modern but still bear the traditional traits of the millennial capital city. Two approach roadways at both ends of the bridge must ensure effective connection with the road network in the area. According to a TEDI study, the 5.5-kilometer bridge runs from the junction of Le Thanh Tong and Tran Thanh Tong streets in Hoan Kiem district to Nguyen Van Linh street or National Road 5 in Long Bien district. TEDI is studying two options for the bridge architecture. The first one bears an Indochinese style, whose highlight would be the piers which would look like Hanoi’s ancient city gates. The second option for Tran Hung Dao bridge. Photo: TEDI In a second option, the highlight is the piers that simulate Tran Hung Dao's sword rising to the sky. In Vietnamese history, Tran Hung Dao was a brilliant military strategist who defeated two Mongol invasions and became a national and mythical hero. In TEDI’s design, the bridge is 31-meter-wide with six-lane which would allow speed of up to 80 kilometers per hour. The final architectural plan will be submitted to the Hanoi People's Committee before October 2020. The municipal government will set up an architectural council to evaluate and appraise the options proposed by the consultant. According to the transport plan to 2030, Hanoi will have 18 bridges crossing the Red river. At present, there are eight bridges, including: …

Hanoi students to enjoy 8-day school break on Lunar New Year

The Hanoitimes - The school break in Hanoi will begin on January 22 (the 28th day of the last lunar month) and last until January 29 (the fifth day of the first lunar month). Hanoi students will have an eight-day school break in the upcoming Tet holiday, according to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training. Accordingly, the school break in Hanoi will begin on January 22 (the 28th day of the last lunar month) and last until January 29 (the fifth day of the first lunar month). Illustrative photo The schools are asked to instruct the students to have proper behavior during the long school break and ensure social order and traffic safety. In particular, students are instructed not to engage in illegal racing, gambling or social evils. Meanwhile, government offices, state-owned companies and schools across the country will close for seven days. This is one of the two seven-day holiday options proposed by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs in August. Under the second option, the holiday would start on January 24, a day before Tet, and run until January 30, the sixth day of the new lunar year. After considering the two options, the ministry considered the first more suitable as people working away from home will have two days off to travel and prepare for the most significant holiday of the year. Vietnam had a nine-day break for the last Tet festival that fell in February this year. There has been a long-lasting debate on whether Vietnam should merge the celebration of Lunar New Year holiday with the Gregorian New Year, or the Tet holiday should be shortened. Tet is the biggest and most important festival in Vietnam. Millions of migrant workers in major cities return to their homes before Lunar New Year's Eve. It is celebrated by Vietnamese and Chinese communities around the world. It is also a prolific season for the retail and travel businesses as the consumption and excursion demand is high during this time …

New Zealand’s Auckland starts second COVID-19 lockdown this month

MELBOURNE -- Exactly one year after New Zealand recorded its first coronavirus case, the country’s biggest city, Auckland, woke up on Sunday to a second lockdown this month as health authorities try to rein in a cluster of the more contagious UK variant. The seven-day lockdown of the city of nearly 2 million, announced late Saturday by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, was prompted by the case of a person who had been infectious for a week but had not been in isolation. “It is more than likely there will be additional cases in the community,” Ardern told a televised news conference, although there were no new cases recorded on Sunday. The lockdown follows a three-day stay-at-home order in mid-February after a local emergence of the UK variant of the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19. There are now about 14 cases linked to the cluster. “Despite our best efforts to date, recent cases have gone to work when they shouldn’t have,” Ardern said. Judith Collins, leader of the opposition, called for tougher penalties against those not following public health advice around isolation. “No one wants to be yo-yoing in and out lockdown,” Collins said in a statement. The new lockdown, with Level 3 restrictions, allows people to leave home only for essential shopping and essential work. Public venues will remain closed. Restrictions in the rest of the country will be tightened to Level 2, including limits on public gatherings. The measures have complicated several high-visibility sporting events planned in Auckland. The organisers of the America’s Cup yacht race said on Sunday the head-to-head final between Italy and New Zealand that was to start March 6 was postponed to at least March 10. New Zealand’s fourth Twenty20 International cricket match against Australia has been shifted to Wellington where it will be played behind closed doors on Friday. Some social media users from around the world expressed dismay at the strong response that would lock down a large …
