It’s a crucial time because if you don’t start acting on your resolution now, chances are you won’t see it through at all. Not unlike us ordinary citizens, the Government of Việt Nam has some resolutions to keep. While the first resolution was the standard offering on socio-economic development for the year, the second was to improve the country’s business environment and competitiveness on the international stage. Goals were set to improve the country’s doing business ranking by 15-20 spots, logistics index by 5-10 spots from 2019-21 and competitiveness ranking by 5-10 spots. The fact that Donald Trump will take office as the next president of the United States makes the ‘Year of the Rooster’ more eerily appropriate than we could ever have imagined. Certainly he’ll be strutting his stuff in Washington, D.C. His actions will have an impact on trade and the economy, that’s for sure; but if he manages to slap China in the face and get away with it... I’ll buy him a beer. On April 11 th, the Lao Embassy in Hanoi solemnly celebrated Laos’ Traditional New Year festival, Bun Pi May, in Hanoi, in the presence of Mr. Le Hong Anh, Politburo Member, Tong Thi Phong, National Assembly Deputy-Chairwoman, Vice-President Nguyen Thi Doan and Mr. Somphone Sichaleune, Lao Ambassador to Vietnam. The event also saw the presence of former experts and volunteers, who fought and worked in Laos in wartime and Lao students in Vietnam. Bun Pi May annually takes place in April. During the festival, the Laotians pray for favourable weather, heavy crops and good health. Members in families will tie threads around the wrists of the elderly and relatives, visit relatives and friends and go to pagodas to pray for health, luck and prosperity for their family.
