Two imported COVID-19 cases confirmed on January 26
Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam reported two imported COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours to 6pm on January 26, raising the total to 1,551, according to the National Steering Committee on COVID-19 Prevention and Control. The new cases, one returned to Vietnam from the US on January 22, and the other from Dubai on January 9, were quarantined upon their arrival at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport. They are being under treatment at Cu Chi hospital for COVID-19 treatment. So far, Vietnam has seen 693 domestically-transmitted cases Also on January 26, five patients were given the all-clear, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,430. Death toll has maintained at 35. Vietnam News Agency brings warmer Tet to poor ethnic children in Kon Tum
Kon Tum (VNA) - About 200 sets of winter clothes were presented to primary school students in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum by the Vietnam News Agency’s representative office in the Central and Central Highlands region and the Kon Tum Power Company on the morning of January 26. The students, who are from the Xe Dang ethnic minority group, are studying at the Dak Nen Semi-Boarding Primary School for Ethnic Minorities in Dak Nen commune, Kon Plong district. The school has a total of eight campuses, the farthest of which is in Dak Puk Village, 30km away from the centre of Dak Nen. The Dak Pao campus has only five students in first grade; the smallest number of all. The handover was part of a programme to bring impoverished children in mountainous and ethnic minority areas a warmer Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday. Vietnam boost sweet potato exports
In the first ten months of 2020, Japan imported 11,030 tonnes of sweet potatoes worth USD13.86m, a decrease of 6% and 15.2% respectively compared to the same period in 2019. The average import prices for potatoes in Japan was USD1,257 a tonne, a 9.7% decrease According to the International Trade Centre, the demand for sweet potatoes in Japan is still very high. China is the biggest seller to Japan with 5,300 tonnes of sweet potatoes in the first ten months of 2020, an increase of 11.9% on last year and accounted for 48.4% of Japan's total imported potato values. Vietnam is in second place with 3,500 tonnes of sweet potatoes, a decrease of 19.4% compared to the same period last year. Indonesia is in third place with 2,260 tonnes, a decrease of 16.5% on last year. However, Vietnam's sweet potatoes are at highest prices of USD2,047 a tonne while sweet potatoes from Indonesia and China were sold at USD1,461 and USD650 a tonne.
