Grand Mercure Danang prepared for new evolving market
With your experience as a general manager for 5-star hotels and resorts in Thailand and elsewhere, what successful experiences you have gained? The most challenging experience was opening four Accor resorts post-pandemic and facing operational issues with the operating systems, and enticing staff back to work and preparing for the return of the tourism industry. My team and I faced this challenge and managed successfully to open all four resorts and deliver the standards of guest experience we are renowned for. My teams’ commitment to the tourism industry and their passion made it possible. Teamwork was the key strength and the main factor in our success. David Coyle - the newly appointed general manager of Grand Mercure Danang Hotel What differences are there between the Thai and Vietnamese tourism markets? The Thailand tourism industry returned quicker and stronger than Vietnam for sure and this was attributable to the Phuket sandbox as well as the … [Read more...] about Grand Mercure Danang prepared for new evolving market
Vietnam’s rice increasingly preferred in UK
Consumers in the UK have been increasingly keen on Vietnam’s rice, especially after ST25 was honored as the best rice variety in the world in 2019, Nguyen Canh Cuong, trade counselor at the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper. UK companies have paid much attention to Vietnam’s rice due to a higher demand in their country and incentives in the UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA). In particular, the UK has waived the import tariff on Vietnam’s fragrant rice instead of imposing a 17.4-percent tax rate as earlier. Vietnam’s rice value on the rise According to statistics from the Vietnam Trade Office in the UK, the European country’s rice imports from Vietnam rose in 2020 and 2021. In 2020, before the UKVFTA took effect, Vietnam’s rice exports to the UK surged to some 3,400 metric tons worth US$2.67 million from nearly 1,300 metric tons in the previous year. Vietnam’s rice exports to the UK fell 20 percent in volume but inched up four percent … [Read more...] about Vietnam’s rice increasingly preferred in UK
US big tech mass layoffs leave Vietnamese international students in limbo
Thuy is a third-year Ph.D student at Rutgers University where she is studying applied mathematics. Last October, she submitted her resume to Google in the hope of landing a research internship in the field of science and technology. However, that plan is currently on hold due to the recent layoffs in the sector. "I feel like I’m in limbo," she said. Thuy is disappointed because she put in a lot of work preparing for interviews with companies she had applied to, which have recently put these jobs on hold again due to the current job cuts. The Vietnamese student revealed that she had applied to be an intern at Amazon, but in November 2022, she received a notice saying that the interview had been postponed. And then she surprisingly heard nothing more about her application. It was also disconcerting for Huy Anh, a third-year computer science student at Texas A&M University, to see the social media app Snap Inc let go of 20% of its staff, including his mentor, during the final … [Read more...] about US big tech mass layoffs leave Vietnamese international students in limbo
Durian prices surge as demand from China jumps
Khang, a durian trader in the southern city of Can Tho, said that he has not been able to buy enough quantity to sell to domestic buyers, as farmers are only willing to sell at high prices. "In Can Tho, one kilogram costs VND150,000 but there is little supply," said Khang. "This price level is uncommonly high." Hanh, a trader in Tien Giang who sells to Chinese buyers, said that she has been busy going to farms and paying high rates. She says she is even willing to pay commissions to those who introduce her to new farms. Local farmers say that durian prices in southern Tien Giang province range from VND120,000 to VND190,000, a triple increase year-on-year. Traders sell to Chinese buyers at even higher prices, from VND170,000 to VND290,000. They say that demand from China has surged several times from previous years. Traders need to gather hundreds of tons each day to deliver to China but supply can only meet 30% to 50% of their needs. Linh in Tien Giang can buy only around … [Read more...] about Durian prices surge as demand from China jumps
Collaborating with AI
ChatGPT's potentials are exciting, but we also hear about its potential impacts on our lives, especially in our work life, namely it can displace white-color workers. It is both exciting and unnerving at the same time. As a writer, I want OpenAI's AI to help me with my writing. I rely on GPT-3, a generative AI model that assist writers in their writing using prompts. This essay is a collaboration between GPT-3 and me. I am describing the process that I used it step by step, and how one can take advantage of it to engage in the creative writing process. The first step is to set up an account on OpenAI to use GPT-3. There are two ways to write with GPT-3. The first way is to use OpenAI's Playground user interface. The second way, and a more technical way is to use OpenAI's Application Programming Interface. Since I can also code, I used the second method because it allows for more control in prompt design. Once the pipeline is ready, I start writing, one sentence at a time. I … [Read more...] about Collaborating with AI
Lifelong love for suit tailoring
Tailoring is one of the oldest professions in Hanoi. What brought you to the profession? I am a second-generation descendant of a family with more than 70 years of working in this area. My father also opened a tailor shop specialising in serving foreigners in the 1950s, when the tailoring profession in Hanoi was still very primitive and the designs and fabrics were monotonous. Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam Shawn Steil visits Van Hung Tailor Hanoi in the 1980s did not have many tailors. Tailoring as a profession was an ideal choice for young people who do not go to college. I studied sewing technology at school, now the Hanoi Vocational School of Cookery, Tourism, and Fashion. This is also the only training institution in tailoring supported by Germany, with only around 100 graduates per year. I was honoured to be one of the 10 best candidates to win a contest organised by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in conjunction with the Berlin Fashion Institute of … [Read more...] about Lifelong love for suit tailoring
