By Minh Nhat in HCMC The Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF), a U.S. federal government independent agency, has announced that 44 new fellows will begin graduate studies and three new visiting scholars will undertake professional development programs at 34 top universities in the U.S. during the academic year 2011-2012. The VEF fellowship program and the VEF visiting scholar program are two of the programs offered by the agency in its efforts to build a relationship between Vietnam and the U.S. through educational exchange and capacity building. Of the 44 new VEF fellows, 35 will be pursuing doctoral degrees while nine will seek master’s degrees at high-profile U.S. universities in the fields of science, technology, and engineering. French firms look for new local landmarks
French companies are keen to get involved in Vietnam's geographic information sector and help support environmental management. Last week, five leading French businesses took part in a conference on "challenges and prospects in geographic information system sin Vietnam" and came out saying they wanted to get on board. The conference, hosted by the French embassy in Vietnam and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, aimed to get the two sides talking opportunities. Speaking at the event, France's ambassador Jean-Francois Girault said geographic information would help Vietnam develop economically, ensure sustainable growth and prevent environmental risks and natural disasters. New regulations set on foreign retail network expansion Tran Thu By Tran Thu - The Saigon Times Daily HCMC – Foreign retailers will have to do Economic Needs Test (ENT) on the basis of the population density of a district rather than a city or province when they want to open the second outlet onwards. This is one of the new regulations given in Circular 08/2013 on trading activities of foreign-invested enterprises released by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in late April. The circular replaces Circular 09/2007 of the Ministry of Trade, precursor of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and will come into force on June 7. If foreign retailers want to set up a new outlet covering less than 500 square meters in the areas with complete infrastructure planned for trading activities by local governments, they will not need to do ENT.
