Japanese auto giant Honda on Thursday said it would invest US$320 million in a new car plant in Indonesia, just days after saying it would build a new motorcycle factory in the fast-developing country. The plant will put together the carmaker's smaller models for domestic sales and export to other Asian markets, the company said in Tokyo. Around 2,000 jobs will be created at the factory near Jakarta, which will have an annual production capacity of 120,000 vehicles, the company said, tripling Honda's current car output in the country. Honda said it expects the 27 billion yen plant to come online in 2014. "Our operations in Indonesia will take the next step to become more autonomous and play an even more important role for Honda in this region," said Hiroshi Kobayashi, chief operating officer in Asia and Oceania. "Honda will not only build automobiles in Indonesia to meet the needs of customers here. Indonesia will serve as a key export base for Honda, for both completed vehicles … [Read more...] about Japan’s Honda to open second Indonesia car plant

After Tesla and Google, Apple appears to be readying for a plunge into the industry long rooted far away in the steel belt of the US upper Midwest. According to various media reports, the maker of iPhones and iPads has created a special unit baptized "Titan" with hundreds of staff to begin developing an electric car, with 2020 the target date. Apple remains silent on the project, but the reports were partially backed up by a lawsuit filed against the tech giant. Battery maker 123 Systems has accused Apple of aggressively poaching its staff. But it puts Apple in line with Tesla, the current champion of the electric car, and Google, the online giant which is focused on the self-driving, also-electric Google Car. The Big Three US automakers -- General Motors, Ford and Chrysler (now a part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, FCA) -- are taking the threat from the Detroit outsiders seriously. "Given the company's (Apple's) tremendous capabilities, that is no surprise to anyone," GM … [Read more...] about Tesla, Google, Apple: is Silicon Valley the future of the US car?
HCM CITY — Metros and sky trains in big cities like Ha Noi and HCM City can only play supplementary roles, an efficient bus rapid transit system is the real key to getting out of the current traffic quagmires they are trapped in, an expert says. Pham Xuan Mai, head of the Automobile Technology faculty at the HCM City University of Technology (HCMUT), said for many reasons, the city has been slow in starting the construction of these projects. Six metro lines and 10 monorail routes were planned to be built in HCM City, but they remained at the planning stage and a search was on for investors, the Sai Gon Giai Phong (Liberated Sai Gon) newspaper reported recently. HCM City and Ha Noi are expected to have up to five metro and monorai lines each over the next 10 years, but these would only meet up to eight per cent of the transport demand, Mai said. To have a public transport system that would be able to meet to more than 40 per cent of the demand by 2020, it is neccessary to … [Read more...] about Bus system key to traffic problem
Today's optional equipment can become tomorrow's standard feature as cars evolve. Air bags, antilock brakes, and stability control. CD players, power locks and windows, and air conditioning. These are all features that at some point were optional (and sometimes costly) in vehicles, but over time we've come to expect them in every new car on the road -- whether that's due to legislation or changing buyer tastes. As cars continue to evolve, so grow our expectations of what should be included in the sticker price. I've rounded up a few optional car tech features that I'd like to see make the jump to being standard equipment. Bluetooth connectivity Let's start with the most obvious one: Bluetooth. The best way to keep phone-toting drivers from plowing into things is to make it easy for them to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road, by use of the ubiquitous Bluetooth connection that nearly every phone has. Unfortunately, early Bluetooth connectivity was pretty … [Read more...] about Six tech features that should be standard in every new car
