Ho Chi Minh City needs to zone specific areas for support and high-tech industries in its industrial parks in order to drive the development of these fields, a business insider has said. At a workshop on June 27, Vu Van Hoa, head of the management board of the HCM City Export Processing and Industrial Zones Authority (Hepza), cited a Vietnam – Japan technology park in the Hiep Phuoc Industrial Zone as example. The park, expected to be operational from this October, is hoped to attract investment from Japanese small- and medium-sized enterprises into high-tech supporting industries, he added. The deputy PM was speaking at the national startup ecosystem event TECHFEST 2016, which opened in Hanoi on November 12 by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The event gathered partners in Vietnam’s startup ecosystem, State agencies, investors, the entrepreneurship support community and new startup groups. Addressing the opening ceremony, Deputy PM Dam emphasised that the startup atmosphere has spread across Vietnam since the first appearance of the term “startup business” in the country during the 2003-2004 period. PM Dung pledges to continue support for Japanese businesses
At a dialogue with business leaders in Tokyo on Friday, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung pledged that the Vietnamese Government will continue to facilitate Japanese businesses in doing business in Vietnam. Addressing the event, which was attended by executives from many leading Japanese corporations including Mitsubishi, Honda, Hitachi , Sumitomo and Canon, the PM also said Vietnam will keep up efforts to provide the best possible investment environment for foreign firms in general and Japanese ones in particular. Vietnam takes the foreign investors' success as its own, as it contributes to the country's socio-economic development, the PM said. Vietnam supporting industry needs government support: analysts
Exports of gadgets like cell phones and computers have surged by up to 97 in the first half, but industry insiders say Vietnamese firms make little value addition. Cell phones and accessories fetched US$9.9 billion and electronics and computers and accessories, $4.7 billion. But Le Van Chinh, a technical consultant at Ho Chi Minh City-based Soncamedia, which designs and produces home and communications electronics, said the capabilities of supporting industry companies remains "very low." His company is willing to pay higher for better quality -- like smoother bolts and plastic sheets -- "but the industry just cannot provide them." He also complained about late deliveries, saying the vendors are all big producers based in the city.
