Colonel Pham Manh Thuong, deputy director of the ministry's Criminal Police Department, said at a conference in Hanoi Tuesday that the police force has been instructed to prioritize action in cases of sexual abuse of children, given recent "complicated developments." Local police have been ordered to report all such cases to the ministry so it could provide guidance and send officers to assist with investigations. Thuong said the Ministry of Public Security's hotline 113 is active all the time. The ministry is implementing a project to enhance capabilities for officials and investigators, and coordinating with the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs to build 10 interrogation/counselling facilities in as many provinces, he said. Thuong also said that the facilities will be staffed by people who can speak local dialects and English. The staff will include women and doctors to assist girl victims. Scotland sets up anti-child trafficking unit as number of Vietnamese victims rises
"The number of people, mainly adults but including children, reported trafficked from Vietnam to Scotland continues to rise," Detective Superintendent Filippo Capaldi, head of the Scotland police’s national human trafficking unit, said. "Many of these people will have come to Scotland, and the U.K., under false promises of a better life, only to find themselves victims of exploitation by criminal gangs." She declined to discuss details about individuals with whom the police are dealing since they are potential victims … [Read more...] about Scotland sets up anti-child trafficking unit as number of Vietnamese victims rises

A farmer collects herbal plants. (Source: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) - The supply, price and use of herbal medicines will be tightened by strengthening policies on quality assessment at medical facilities, Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien has stressed. Speaking at a recent conference, Tien said that for a long time, prices of medicines in Vietnam have been higher than in other regional countries, putting a huge burden on the social insurance fund. The difference in prices of traditional herbal medicines reflects the distinguished quality of medicinal plants, according to Tran Van On, head of the Department of Botany under Hanoi University of Pharmacy. Since Vietnam has a rich biodiversity, one herbal species includes different types with various sizes. “Consumers may buy poor-quality herbal medicines at high prices if we do not set a common standard for these products,” said On. With the aim of addressing the issue, he recommended the Ministry of Health (MoH) to … [Read more...] about Prices of herbal medicines to be standardised
