Davos 2023: Climate change leads to more malaria, tuberculosis up in a recession
Climate change is increasing malaria infections, the executive director of the world's biggest health fund said in Davos on Monday. Huge surges in malaria infections followed recent floods in Pakistan and cyclones in Mozambique in 2021, said Peter Sands, the executive director of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. "Whenever you have an extreme weather event it's fairly common to have a surge of malaria," he said at the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos. The increase in extreme weather events, and the resulting large pools of standing water that attract mosquitoes, are leaving poorer populations vulnerable. He said climate change was also changing the geography of mosquitoes. The highlands of Africa, in Kenya and Ethiopia, are now succumbing to malaria because of a shift in the low temperatures that once made the area unsustainable for mosquitoes. Sands runs the world's largest global fund, which invests in fighting tuberculosis, malaria … [Read more...] about Davos 2023: Climate change leads to more malaria, tuberculosis up in a recession
Key trends to watch out for in the Year of the Cat
David Liao, co-chief executive for Asia Pacific at HSBC In particular, the reopening of China’s borders and the recovery of consumption on the mainland are expected to boost the economy and India and ASEAN are set to further expand their growth potential. Here are six key trends I’ll be watching out for this year: Geopolitics is reshaping the global industrial chain The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war may trigger new energy and food crises, push up inflation, exacerbate supply chain bottlenecks, and expand geopolitical risks. Meanwhile, technology is now taking centre stage in the China-US trade war that erupted in 2018. The restrictions on bilateral trade and investment between the two countries are expected to continue and expand further into core technology. An opportunity to accelerate the energy transition It's time to accelerate the energy transition, especially the generation of sustainable energy, innovative storage solutions, and more sustainable energy … [Read more...] about Key trends to watch out for in the Year of the Cat
The keys to economic momentum
The keys to economic momentum. Photo: Shutterstock Michele Wee, CEO of Standard Chartered Vietnam “Maintaining macroeconomic stability” We expect the global economy to slow in 2023 as central banks around the world maintain restrictive monetary policies. We forecast modest global GDP growth of 2.5 per cent in 2023, slowing from an expected 3.4 per cent in 2022. The headwinds that have faced most economies in 2022 are likely to persist in the months ahead, however, we anticipate a recovery to take hold in the second half. Our recent global research report on Vietnam indicates that GDP growth is likely to remain strong in 2023. We still have a conviction about Vietnam’s high-growth potential over the medium term, expecting the growth rate to be 7.2 per cent in 2023 and 6.7 per cent in 2024. While macro indicators moderated somewhat in Q4/2022, they remain largely robust. Retail sales posted solid growth in the second half of 2022, implying improved … [Read more...] about The keys to economic momentum
