Vietnam backs U.N.’s efforts to improve road traffic safety
The session adopted the “Political declaration of the high-level meeting on improving global road safety,” with the 193-member General Assembly committed to drive the implementation of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, including the goal to half road traffic deaths in the next eight years. Speaking at the event, Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Tra, Charge d'affaires a.i. of Vietnam to the U.N., affirmed that Vietnam totally supports the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030. For the realisation of its goal, she said it is necessary to strengthen road safety legislation at global, regional and national levels to address current and emerging challenges. NA starts project to improve people-elected bodies’ capacity
Vietnam's emblem The Office of National Assembly (ONA) on January 31 launched the third phase of a programme to strengthen the capacity of people’s elected bodies in Viet Nam . The 7.5 million USD project, sponsored by the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the governments of Canada and Ireland , the Danish Trust Fund, the UK Department of International Development (DFID) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), will be carried out between 2008 and 2012. This phase will be beneficial to all provincial People’s Councils nationwide as an extension from 16 localities in the first and second phases. Children from across Ho Chi Minh City have spent their first few weeks of summer visiting the children’s section of the General Sciences Library, located in downtown District 1, to read in a comfortable environment and participate in a variety of clubs and activities. Nguyen Ngoc Lan, a fifth grader from District 3, has spent nearly the entire week at the library eagerly reading books and participating in the dozens of activities hosted by staff and guests there, including storytelling sessions and advice on choosing new books to read. UK, EC propose setting up G7-Vietnam energy transition partnership: British minister
The UK and the European Commission (EC) have agreed to sign a proposal to Vietnamese government for setting up a partnership for energy transition between the group of seven developed economies (G7) and Vietnam, British Cabinet Office Minister Alok Sharma has stated. The UK minister released the information at his meeting in London on Thursday with visiting Vietnamese National Assembly (NA) Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, who arrived on Tuesday for a three-day visit at the invitations of Speaker of the UK House of Lords John McFall and Speaker of the House of Commons of the UK Lindsay Hoyle, the Vietnam News Agency reported. Storm Chaba predicted to cause torrential rain in the north until next Thursday
Chaba, the first tropical storm to hit the East Sea this year, is predicted to gain more strength and cause torrential rain in the northern region between Saturday and Thursday. Localities in affected areas are urgently preparing for the adverse weather conditions. The National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting warned that heavy rain will hit the northeast region with rainfall from 40-90mm on Friday night. Rainfall is predicted to be 100-200mm in the northern region and up to 150-300mm in the northeast region on Sunday and Monday. The heavy rain will last until Thursday, the centre said. Data from the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting shows that by 10am on Saturday, the eye of the typhoon will be on the east coast of China’s Leizhou Peninsula, about 310km south-southeast of Quảng Ninh Province. Tropical storm Chaba picks up strength as it moves northwest
Tropical storm Chaba, the first storm to affect Vietnam this year, is gathering strength, with wind speeds near its centre reaching 89-102 kilometres per hour. According to the national weather service, the system was located at 400 kilometres east-southeast of China’s Hainan Island at 7am on July 1. Chaba is forecast to travel in a northwest direction for the next 24 hours at a speed of 15 kilometres per hour and is likely to strengthen further, packing winds of 103-117 kilometres per hour. At 7am on July 2, the tropical storm will be located about 370 kilometres east-southeast of Quang Ninh Province, before continuing northwest and to make landfall in the southeast of China’s Guangxi Province the following day.
