Thai economy grows at fastest pace in five years

Thailand’s economy posted the strongest growth in five years in 2017. (Photo: The Straits Times) Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand’s economy posted the strongest growth in five years in 2017 and is expected to maintain the outlook this year, driven robust exports and tourism. Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew an inflation-adjusted 3.9 percent in 2017, up from 3.3 percent from the previous year, marking its fastest expansion since 2012, according to the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB). The economy looks set to grow faster this year with GDP forecast to expand by 3.6-4.6 percent. A steady recovery in exports and large government infrastructure projects, including the expansions of ports and roads as part of a 45 billion project for a new special economic zone on the east coast of the country, are expected to support growth in 2018. National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan addresses the meeting (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan hosted a reception in Hanoi on March 7 for a delegation from the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (the Parliamentary Network) led by its Vice President Soukri Cherif. Showing her delight at the effective cooperation between Vietnam and the WB, the top legislator said that Vietnam needs the support of the international community, including the bank, to fulfill its goals amidst many difficulties and challenges. She affirmed that the NA of Vietnam will closely supervise the management and use of WB assistance, ensuring it is used effectively to bring added value to the local socio-economic development. Air pollution in the city has been worsening – PHOTO: VNA HCMC - Air pollution in Hanoi has been worsening, with the air quality index recorded on some days reaching the brown level, which means the air quality is hazardous and poses a serious health risk. On December 13, the monitoring system of the municipal Environmental Protection Agency recorded that 10 of 11 sites were encountering serious air pollution. It later reached the purple level, with the air quality index (AQI) exceeding 200. Service sector sees biggest increase after GDP recalculation

It was followed by the industry and construction sector, up VND211-555 trillion ($9.09-23.91 billion) a year. The agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sector rose VND25-46 trillion ($1.08-1.98 billion) per year. After revising its GDP methodology to match international standards, the agriculture, forestry and fisher sector’s GDP contribution decreased from 17.4 percent to 14.7 percent, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO). The industry and construction sectors grew from 33 percent to 34 percent of GDP, while the service grew from 39.2 percent to 41.2 percent. With the revised methodology, Vietnam formally raised its GDP by an average 25.4 percent for the 2010-2017 period. Tiny Oanh stands tall for Việt Nam at SEA Games

Nguyễn Thị Oanh crossed the finish line and lay down on the ground, exhausted. Tiny Oanh stands tall for Việt Nam at SEA Games Minutes later, she took the national flag from her coach to celebrate her 3,000m steeplechase victory and burst into tears. Oanh didn't realise she had just become Việt Nam's top track-and-field athlete at the 30th Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines. Oanh secured a hat-trick of individual titles in the women’s 1,500m, 5,000m and 3,000m steeplechase, with a Games’ record in the last event. “I's so exciting to enjoy the feeling of winning. There is nothing that makes me happier than seeing the national flag flying at the victory ceremony,” said Oanh.
