World News in Brief: April 11

* Philippine and US soldiers will conduct a two-week joint military exercise from Monday, resuming the annual training event after last year's cancellation due to the pandemic, the Philippine military chief said on Sunday. * The funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh will be held at Windsor on April 17, with no public access nor public procession beforehand, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said Saturday. The event is to be a "ceremonial royal funeral", rather than a state funeral, which "very much reflects the duke's wishes", a palace spokesman said. * China has administered 164.47 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines as of Saturday, the National Health Commission said on Sunday. This represents around 24.5 million doses in the past six days, as the country's vaccine rollout continues to accelerate. * Brazil's COVID-19 death toll has risen to 351,334 after 2,616 new deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health reported on Saturday. Meanwhile, the country registered 71,832 new cases, bringing the national tally to 13,445,006, the ministry said. * Russia reported on Sunday 8,702 new COVID-19 cases, including 2,090 in Moscow, taking the national infection tally to 4,641,390 since the pandemic began. The government coronavirus taskforce reported 337 deaths in the last 24 hours, pushing the total death toll to 102,986. * Thailand on Sunday reported 967 new COVID-19 cases, its biggest daily jump, but no new deaths as the country deals with a third wave of infections and a highly contagious variant. Of the infections, 964 were domestic transmissions, including 236 in the capital Bangkok, the epicentre of an outbreak that has spread to most of Thailand's 77 provinces. * Malaysia reported 1,739 new COVID-19 infections, the Health Ministry said on Sunday, bringing the national total to 360,856. Unique ceramic streets in Lien Mac village Residents of Lien Mac village in Hanoi’s Bac Tu Liem district have been busy collecting discarded materials such as ceramics, bottles, and dishes to decorate the village’s streets. The initiative was inspired by a group of painters and received a warm response from local people, especially in collecting materials and gluing the ceramic pieces together. The mosaic walls also help spread a message to everyone about environmental protection. The vivid and artistic artworks have already garnered major attention from local people and visitors alike./. VNA, NA Office release photo book on 14th legislature The Vietnam News Agency (VNA) and the National Assembly (NA) Office have coordinated in compiling and publishing a photo book on the 14th legislature. The 428-page book, titled “Quoc hoi khoa XIV - Nhung thanh tuu va dau an noi bat” (The 14th National Assembly – Outstanding achievements and imprints,” comprises nearly 1,000 photos featuring the past five-year journey of the legislative body. Such photos, together with infographics, give readers an insight into the NA’s performance in legislation, supervision, decision-making on the country’s major matters, and external affairs. The book also devotes pages to introducing 494 deputies to the 14th NA, who are grouped in provincial and municipal delegations of NA deputies. The book has been released at the end of the 14th legislature that created many hallmarks during the five-year tenure. The 14th NA concluded its 11th session - the last of this tenure - in Hanoi on April 8, with many important contents on reviewing the tenure's work, building laws and handling personnel matters completed over the course of 12 days./. GDP’s leader visits Can Tho city on traditional Chol Chnam Thmay festival

Major General Nguyen Van Gau, Political Commissar of Military Region 9 (MR9), representatives of the GDP’s organs, MR9, and Can Tho city also joined the mission. This is the first year that the MR9 Command has worked with the Can Tho municipal People’s Committee and the Khmer Theravada Buddhist Institute to organize a military-civilian festival to celebrate the Khmer’s traditional New Year, also known as the Chol Chnam Thmay festival. The activity contributed to showing the care of the Party, State, Military and MR9’s armed forces towards the Khmer people and Khmer Theravada Buddhist followers in the Mekong Delta. At the Khmer Theravada Buddhist Institute in Chau Van Liem Ward, O Mon district, Can Tho city, General Phuong inquired after and sent greetings to Most Venerable Dao Nhu, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha Executive Council, Head of the institute; monks, dignitaries, and followers of the Khmer Theravada Buddhism in the region. The GDP’s Deputy Director also shared socio-economic development achievements as well as COVID-19 prevention and control developments. He also expressed his hope that they would continue to strictly observe the Party’s and State’s guidelines and policies, actively take part in national patriotic emulation movements, join the upcoming elections of deputies to the 15th National Assembly and people’s councils at all levels, and seriously implement the pandemic prevention and control measures according to the Health Ministry’s instructions. The delegates took this occasion to hand over gifts to some learners of the institute as well as to several monks, dignitaries, and followers in the area. * The same day, General Phuong inquired after and presented gifts to families of national contributors with Khmer natives.
