Laos considers curbing imports to save foreign currency
At a food fair in Vientiane, Laos (Photo: Xinhua/VNA) Vientiane (VNA) – The Lao Government is considering imposing limits on a number of imported goods in an attempt to minimize or cut the use of foreign currency on non-essential items amid dwindling foreign currency reserves, Lao Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh said. Responding to National Assembly deputies’ questions at the third session of the 9th legislature, the PM said vehicles, alcoholic beverages and other imported luxury items are among goods to be considered for the import curb. Laos is suffering from a shortage of foreign currency, so the government is struggling to purchase and import sufficient essential items, notably fuel. It wrote that with export and consumption recovery, the Vietnamese economy rebounded strongly in Q2, with gross domestic product (GDP) increasing 7.72% year on year – the fastest pace in almost 11 years. This is expected to boost the GDP growth in the first half of 2022 to 6.42% from a year earlier, beyond the Government’s 5.5% expectation. The country recorded a growth rate of only 2.04% in the same period last year. India naval ships visit Vietnam
During Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Hanoi from June 8 to 10, Vietnam and India released a joint vision statement on defense cooperation towards 2030. Two Indian naval ships, INS SAHYADRI and INS KADMATT under the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, Rear Admiral Sanjay Bhalla, NM are making a port call at Ho Chi Minh City Port, Vietnam for three days starting on June 26. India bans many single-use plastics to tackle waste
India imposed a ban on many single-use plastics on Friday in a bid to tackle waste choking rivers and poisoning wildlife, but experts say it faces severe headwinds from unprepared manufacturers and consumers unwilling to pay more. The country generates around four million tonnes of plastic waste per year, about a third of which is not recycled and ends up in waterways and landfills that regularly catch fire and exacerbate air pollution. Stray cows munching on plastic are a common sight in Indian cities and a recent study found traces in the dung of elephants in the northern forests of Uttarakhand state. Estimates vary but around half comes from items used once, and the new ban covers the production, import and sale of ubiquitous objects like straws and cups made of plastic as well as wrapping on cigarette packets.
