Memories of former war prisoners in Phu Quoc
These days, coming back to Phu Quoc Prison - known as “Hell on Earth,” former prisoners of war (POW) recalled dreadful and brutal tortures by jailers. Going along a small path leading to the gate of Phu Quoc Communist POWs’ Prison, many people got the shivers after witnessing a dozen layers of sharp barbed-wire fences and models of prisoner guards holding guns. The iron door creaked when we opened it slowly. The screeching noise made us partly feel the dark atmosphere of the ruthless prison during the colonial and imperialistic periods. Among groups of tourists nationwide visiting Phu Quoc Prison, we luckily met and talked with Mr. Phu Xi Khieu, a former Phu Quoc prisoner in the 1971-1973 period. Looking back on his memories, Mr. Khieu shared that returning to Phu Quoc after 50 years, he was delighted at the rapid development of Phu Quoc city. Yen Bai unleashing tourism in village “oasis”
In the early days of March, Giang A Sua, director of the Mang Mu cooperative, conducted a fact-finding tour to Lung Cung village to explore its tourism potential. He expects to become a tour guide for groups coming to admire the beauty of “ son tra ” or “tao meo”, signature trees of the northwestern region that bloom in late March. Located at an altitude of over 2,000 metres above sea level, Lung Cung village has a total area of nearly 60 square kilometres and over 200 households. It is depicted as a paradise of flowers during the spring. “Son tra” or “tao meo” in particular bring high economic values to villagers. Local people are also able to preserve traditional houses with roofs made from hundred-year-old wood. Tra Vinh province eyes expansion in organic coconut growing areas

(Photo: VNA) Tra Vinh (VNA) - The Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh is encouraging farmers to grow more organic coconuts to increase the value of the produce. Tran Van Dung, deputy director of its Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said coconut farmers and companies would be offered preferential policies for the purpose and linked up to establish value chains . The department has instructed its Plant Protection and Cultivation Sub-department to teach farmers organic coconut growing techniques and strengthen advocacy about its benefits. Besides reducing costs, the cultivation of organic coconuts also helps protect the environment and community health. Ancient town to host International Choir Competition
The event has received registrations from 20 teams representing nine countries and territories, and will feature 13 events with eight grades held at the city's theater. Organized by Interkultur and Hoi An since 2011, the competition expects to gather thousands of artists performing in the men’s and women’s mixed and equal voice of sacred choral music, hymn, chamber, and folklore with age groups of youth, teen, and adult. The opening ceremony of the event will take place at the Hoi An Theater at 8p.m. on April 2, and the troupes will hold a parade from the theater to wind through the Old Quarter of Hoi An after the award ceremony on April 4.
