“Second Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe Canal” in the pipeline The Saigon Times A scene of Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe Canal - PHOTOS: THANH HOA The project to improve the water environment of the Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe Canal system is one of the most ambitious environmental endeavors in HCMC since 1975. Once the most polluted canal system in this city, Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe, which used to be lined with slums on its bank and whose unmistakably pungent smell was unbearable, has undergone a sweeping change to become a symbol of the efforts to improve environmental pollution in HCMC. Now that the preparations for the project to clean up and renovate the environment of the Tham Luong Canal – Ben Cat – Nuoc Len Canal system is being completed, it is expected to become another Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe Canal system, reported Tuoi Tre newspaper. Stretching on a total length of 33 kilometers, the Tham Luong Canal – Ben Cat – Nuoc Len Canal system is the longest of its kind in HCMC. The system runs across seven districts, including Binh Chanh District, District 12, Go Vap District, Tan Binh District, Tan Phu District, Binh Tan District and Binh Thanh District. In fact, this project is not totally new as the city government once tried to implement it to improve the heavily polluted environment along this canal system. In 2016, the second phase of this project was approved with construction scheduled to begin in 2017. However, in that year, the World Bank, the project’s then money lender, withdrew, and it has been stalled since. A project to benefit many But it has revived. The HCMC People’s Council has recently given the green light to the investment in cleaning up the Tham Luong Canal – Ben Cat – Nuoc Len Canal system. Of the estimated fund for this environmental plan worth VND8.2 trillion, some VND4 trillion will be sourced by the central Government’s budget and the rest from the municipal budget. A former lottery ticket seller who has received many prestigious awards over the years has been living in special circumstances. Thia teaches swimming Tran Thi Kim Thia, or Sau Thia, 63, was born into a poor family and grew up in Go Cong Dong district in Tien Giang province. As her parents died young, she came to Hung Thanh commune in Thap Muoi district in Dong Thap province at the age of 34, and has been living there since. Unmarried, with no children, Sau Thia lives alone. When she was young, she earned her living by selling lottery tickets and peeling cashews. If she could sell 200 tickets a day, she would have VND200,000. For every kilogram of peeled cashew, she got VND400 more. In the 1980-1990s, she was invited to take the work of the women’s union. Later, she worked at the Red Cross as a collaborator in the population planning program. In 2002, when the Hung Thanh commune localities launched a project on swimming universalization for children, she became a trainer. The new task made her feel anxious. In the first year, she set up two groups, with seven children in each group. The number increased in subsequent years to 50-60. Some children who had failed to learn in other classes were able to swim well after practicing with Thia. Thia became beloved by parents, who entrusted their children to her. In 2020, she suddenly fell seriously ill. As she was brought to the hospital quickly, she escaped death. So she stopped selling tickets. She now spends most of her time teaching swimming to children. Every day, she has 2-3 training shifts with children. Over the last 19 years of giving free swimming lessons, nearly 4,000 children in Dong Thap Muoi learned to swim. “In the past, I both sold lottery tickets and gave swimming lessons. Some people said I was so foolish because I spent time teaching swimming which could not bring money. 133 local COVID-19 cases reported on June 17 evening Vietnam reported 136 new COVID-19 cases, including 133 domestic ones, in the past six hours to 6pm on June 17, according to the Ministry of Health. Bac Giang province and Ho Chi Minh City each logged 62 cases, while Bac Ninh had six, Ha Tinh two and Lang Son one. Of them, 131 infections were found in quarantine facilities and sealed off areas. As of June 17 evening, Vietnam documented a total 12,150 COVID-19 cases, including 10,483 locally transmitted ones. The number of cases since April 27, when the latest resurgence began, amounted to 8,913. On the day, 63 patients were given the all-clear, bringing the number of recoveries to 4,653. The death toll stood at 61. Among active patients undergoing treatment at medical establishments, 407 have tested negative for coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 once, 114 twice and 65 thrice. Twenty-four provinces have gone through 14 consecutive days without new cases. As of 5pm on June 17, the COVID-19 vaccine fund had received nearly 5.7 trillion VND (248.23 million USD) from 316,466 organisations and individuals, its managing board announced.
