The PM had a working session with key leaders of Tuyen Quang on February 23 after attending the launching of the tree-planting festival in the northern mountainous province. He stressed that Tuyen Quang should become an important hub of wood industry of Vietnam and the region, asking the locality to mobilize all resources for the goal. At the same time, Tuyen Quang should expand a number of other agricultural sectors, he said, suggesting that the province increase the area of sugar canes for export and call on investors to invest more in agriculture and forestry. The PM reminded Tuyen Quang, the province to pay greater attention to preserving and promoting unique cultural identities of ethnic minority groups in the locality, thus boosting the development of tourism and service sectors. PM Phuc expressed delight at dramatic changes that the province has made in the past 10 years in both urban and rural areas. However, he noted that the province has still faced many difficulties in socio-economic development and investment attraction, keeping it a poor province. On the occasion, PM Phuc visited the Tan Trao special national relic site in Son Duong district, which comprises 183 smaller relic sites having close relations with the national liberation cause in the middle of the 20th century. The HCMC Urban Environment Company (Citenco) and the HCMC Finance and Investment State-owned Company (HFIC) said the projects would use advanced technologies to promote sustainable development and foster a green economy. One of the projects is to complete a 20 ha landfill at the Phuoc Hiep waste treatment complex in Cu Chi District. The landfill, which can process 2,000 tons of waste each day, is expected to commence within the first quarter this year and be completed in three months. The VND200 billion landfill project will be a backup plan when existing landfills become overloaded or stop operating. The construction of a VND3 trillion waste-to-energy power plant within the same landfill is another project. With an incinerating capacity of 1,000 tons of waste a day, the plant is expected to help reduce trash in the city while producing electricity for the national grid. Another project, relocating a hazardous waste treatment plant from Hoc Mon District to Cu Chi, would also be carried out by 2023. The VND400-600 billion project will help increase the plant’s waste treatment capacity to 1,000 tons a day. The second phase for the construction of the Da Phuoc Cemetery in Binh Chanh District is also a part of the plan. The 46 ha, VND2 trillion cemetery will have over 46,000 graves. It will met reburial demands from the Binh Hung Hoa and other cemeteries in the city. The firms plan to spend VND100-200 billion on replacing garbage trucks and other environmental vehicles by buying 50-100 new vehicles. Nguyen Ngoc Hoa, HFIC Board of Members, said over 50 percent of the project’s investment capital would be derived from existing sources, and the rest mobilized from both domestic and foreign sources. HCMC now discharges around 9,300 tons of domestic waste a day, with 10 percent more being added every year. Hi-tech agriculture proves effective in Dong Nai Agricultural production has been affected by abnormal weather conditions, climate change, and diseases over recent years. Many farms in southern Dong Nai province have applied high-technology in agricultural production in order to cope with the situation, helping increase quality and output. High-tech production requires massive investment, not just capital but also technology, equipment, and “grey matter”, to adapt to cutting-edge manufacturing methods. High-tech manufacturing models have been expanded around Dong Nai, especially in animal husbandry and on poultry farms. Dong Nai has more than 46,000 hectares of crops using water-saving technology and the province has gradually changed to green breeding in accordance with Vietnamese Good Agricultural Practice (VietGAP) standards. Agriculture accounts for 8.3 percent of Dong Nai’s economic structure and agro-forestry-fisheries value currently stands at nearly 1.8 billion USD.
