Ho Chi Minh City is striving to use 10 per cent of the city’s wastes for power generation by 2015, according to the city’s Natural Resources and Environment Department. According to forecasts, the amount of the city’s waste will increase by 7,500 tonnes per day, up by 10,000 tonnes from now. The city has also drafted a plan to produce power from wastes. At this point, 3 companies, namely Tam Sinh Nghia Investment and Development Joint-Stock Company, Kepple Seghers Engineering and International Environmental Energy (IEE) are projecting to build power generators from wastes. The city’s Natural Resources and Environment Department confirmed that Tam Nghia Sinh has submitted a project to build a waste-burning power plant that will cost US$ 140 million and can burn 2,000 tones of wastes per day, in Cu Chi District. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, president of the Clinton Foundation, arrived in Ha Noi yesterday for a two-day visit, ending his tour of Asian countries affected by the Tsunami of 2004 as well as the visits he has made to HIV/AIDS initiative projects administered by his foundation. The major objective of his stay in Ha Noi is to sign an agreement with Health Minister Tran Thi Trung Chien related to the supply of medicines for the treatment and testing of some 1,200 Vietnamese children infected with HIV/AIDS. The agreement will be in effect until the end of 2007. The signing ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Presidential Palace this afternoon under the witness of President Nguyen Minh Triet.
