Luggage piles join long airport lines in fresh woes for summer travel
Once a cost-cutting and outsourcing target for aviation, ground handlers are now being offered raises, as frazzled passengers take to social media to complain about missing baggage. The hiring can't come fast enough as a rebound in travel and badly-needed airline revenue this summer is being weighed by congestion, rising costs and labor strife, after a two-year pandemic vacuum. Air Canada said late on Wednesday it would cut flights in July and August to reduce passenger flows to a level that the air transport system can accommodate. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW), which represents ground handlers, including baggage and cargo handlers, for Air Canada among other carriers, said some Canadian workers are being offered raises and double pay to work beyond eight-hour shifts, a union official said. "It's created a bit of a bidding war," said Dave Flowers, an IAMAW national president in Canada specializing in air transportation. Flowers … [Read more...] about Luggage piles join long airport lines in fresh woes for summer travel

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, in a message on Twitter late on Tuesday, lodged a "strong objection over the unlawful live fire drills" to be carried out by Taiwan this week around the island, known internationally as Itu Aba, or Ba Binh in Vietnam. "This illegal activity raises tensions and complicates the situation in the South China Sea," it said. Taiwan's foreign ministry said in a statement the island was part of the territory of the Republic of China - Taiwan's formal name - and that it enjoyed all relevant rights accorded by international law. "Our country has the right to conduct routine exercises on Taiping Island and related maritime areas. In order to ensure the safety of maritime traffic and fishing boats operating in adjacent maritime areas, we notify the relevant regional countries in advance before each live-fire drill," it said. Itu Aba is the biggest feature in the Spratly Islands. Zarour started his career at Cannes in France's third division and moved to Dijon in Ligue 2 for the 2009-2010 season. Zarour was the mainstay of Dijon's promotion to Ligue 1 in the 2011-2012 season. Rising stock account numbers despite plunging trade causes worry
"I opened the other three accounts because registration is easy and more brokerages mean I get to receive more regular investment advice," the 30-year-old office worker explained. In the last two years brokerages have hugely simplified the account opening process, he said. When he opened his first account in 2020, he had to visit the brokerage, but this year he opened a new account online. People like Dung are partially the reason why the number of new stock accounts has been skyrocketing despite a decline in trading. Over 476,000 new accounts were registered in May, the highest ever monthly figure in the stock market’s two-decade history, according to the Vietnam Securities Depository. Around 1.4 million new accounts were opened in the first five months of this year, higher than the total number added between 2017 and 2020. There are now 5.65 million stock accounts, or one each for 5.7 percent of the population. But the average daily trading in May fell by 32 percent … [Read more...] about Rising stock account numbers despite plunging trade causes worry
Hanoi lake experiences mass fish deaths
A large amount of fish has been found dead in the Yen So Lake in Hanoi's Hoang Mai District over the past few days. Dead fish can be seen floating on an area stretching across dozens of metres on the lake. No visitors or local people are seen taking a walk or doing physical exercises around the lake as usual. Most of the dead fish are tilapia. Dozens of environmental workers arrived to collect the dead fish on June 27. Workers said that the work would take several days due to the large amount of dead fish and rubbish on the lake. This is not the first time the lake has reported mass fish deaths. The same problem occurred last June when local authorities concluded that hot weather was the cause. … [Read more...] about Hanoi lake experiences mass fish deaths
