China's consumer-price index rose 3.8% in October from a year earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics said Saturday -- higher than a median forecast of 3.5% by economists polled by The Wall Street Journal, and far outpacing September's 3.0% reading. As it has all year, October's jump in consumer inflation was fueled by a rise in hog prices, the fastest on record, amid an outbreak of the deadly African swine fever. Soaring pork prices lifted overall food-price inflation to a more-than-11 year high, as consumer demand drove up prices for pork alternatives including eggs and other meat products. Even as the surge in food prices limits Chinese policy makers' stimulus options, prices of nonfood items and factory-gate prices continued to show signs of softness, pointing to weakening demand in the world's second-largest economy. Nonfood price inflation moderated further to 0.9% in October, from 1.0% in September. Vietnam improves position on global hunger index
With an overall score of 15.3 out of 100, the level of hunger in Vietnam has been classified as ‘moderate,’ according to the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2019 report released last week by Irish aid agency Concern Worldwide and German organization Welt Hunger Hilfe. The index measured 117 countries and territories around the world to compare the levels of hunger between countries and regions, and to call for more efforts in the areas with greatest need of additional resources to eliminate hunger. The GHI score was calculated based on four indicators, including undernourishment, child wasting, child stunting and child mortality. The higher a country's GHI score, the worse off it is. A score of 0 would indicate zero hunger in the country. Vietnam has made substantial improvements to have its global hunger score fall from 28.3 in 2000 to 15.3 this year. Last year, Vietnam's level of hunger was also ranked ‘moderate’ with an overall score of 16, putting the country in … [Read more...] about Vietnam improves position on global hunger index

It notes that from 1990 to 2018, Vietnam had an average annual HDI growth of 1.36 percent, the 20th best rate of all countries and territories. Vietnam's growth was also the fourth fastest in Southeast Asia, behind Laos (1.49 percent), Cambodia (1.49 percent) and Myanmar (1.85 percent). In the covered period, life expectancy in Vietnam increased by 4.8 years, its mean years of schooling by 4.3 years, its expected years of schooling by 4.9 years and its Gross National Income per capita by 354.5 percent. Meanwhile, Vietnam's loss of HDI value and income due to inequality in 2018 was 16.3 and 18.1 percent, respectively, … [Read more...] about Vietnam strides forward in human development index growth
Fears of further eruption as New Zealand volcano toll climbs
WHAKATANE — Intensifying fears of another eruption frustrated efforts to recover bodies from New Zealand's White Island on Thursday as the official death toll from the volcano disaster rose to eight. Many more victims of Monday's explosion are battling to survive after suffering horrific burns at the popular tourist attraction, which police said was still too dangerous to land on. "Police remain focused on supporting families at this terrible time," they said in a statement. Health officials said that 23 survivors were being treated in New Zealand, 17 of them listed as critical, and another five had been transferred to Australia.
