The Central Highlands province of Kon Tum on Dec. 14 hosted a conference to promote socio-economic development cooperation between a number of localities of Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. The localities include provinces of Kon Tum, Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh of Vietnam, Ubon Ratchathani and Sisakhet of Thailand and Champasak, Salavan, Sekong and Attapeu of Laos. Nguyen Van Hung, Chairman of the Kon Tum Provincial People's Committee told the conference that these provinces with their own potential and strengths will complement one another to create an abundant number of products and services in all fields. At the conference, delegates suggested ideas for cooperation and agreed upon cooperative regulations in order to map out implementation plans in future. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung reaffirmed Vietnam's strong support for cooperation in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) towards integration, prosperity and sustainable development. The fourth Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS-4) Summit on the theme "Towards a New Decade of GMS Strategic Development Partnership" officially opened in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, on December 20 with the participation of the six member nations including Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, China and Vietnam. The flow of the river will be weakened seriously or it can dry out completely if its waters is transferred to other rivers, like a man who loses his blood, wrote Prof., Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Tran. According to Tran, besides challenges caused from the construction of hydro-power dams, deforestation and transferring the river’s water to other rivers or reservoirs, there are also other major threats to the MekongRiver. The cost of deforestation The destruction of upstream watersheds poses a great threat to the river, especially in the tropical region. The loss of forest brings about landslide and erosion which results in the raising the level of the river bed, the change of river geomorphology and river hydro-meteorology and in some cases, even the geomorphology of the region.
