Mangrove worm a staple in saigons beloved porridge
Organic rice being grown in sand worm fields
Farmers in Tu Ky district , Hai Duong province said sand worms are very sensitive to chemicals and can only live in clean soil and water. Therefore, farmers grow rice without the use of any chemicals. The rice and worms live in a symbiotic environment, with the rice providing a suitable environment for the worms to grow. Since their main source of income comes from sand worms, local farmers must create the cleanest environment possible to ensure their stable growth and development. If a field is not clean and pesticides are used, the worms will die and farmers will face losing 300 million to 1 billion VND each year. To protect and promote the specialty Bai Rui rice, the local government has mapped out a plan to develop high-tech agricultural production and organic agricultural products such as sand worms and rice. This includes financial support, seeds, and technology transfer for local farmers to grow clean organic rice ./. VNA … [Read more...] about Organic rice being grown in sand worm fields

Paying $1M for a Saigon ‘tube house’ just isn’t worth it
Tall and thin, Vietnam's tube houses, known as nha ong , were built to optimize space in crowded urban areas. A three-story house in an alley near downtown Saigon with a total floor area of 140 square meters was introduced to him at the price of VND21 billion ($895,000). If he sells all his assets in the U.S., with some help from his son, he can pay for it. But "it’s not worth it," he said, "paying almost $1 million for a tube house." He decided to move further to the outskirts, where he bought a large piece of land and built a house with a garden and a fish pond. For dozens of years, the tube house has become a symbol of life in urban Vietnam. People in crowded cities accept living in these houses that often do not have enough space for proper rooms or to bring enough air and sunlight to the people inside. I visited my friend who has a tube house and had to bend and contort myself just to use the restroom which was built under the stairs to make use of the space. … [Read more...] about Paying $1M for a Saigon ‘tube house’ just isn’t worth it

Turning HCMC’s Can Gio into resort town is ambitious
"Very ambitious project given current financial and population constraints. Like the metro, it will take 3-4 times longer so look to 2150 to complete." nnnosg "They should shelve this idea right now. Awful proposal. No international tourists will be attracted to this. Not to mention the dramatic ecological damage this sort of development would cause. The 100% focus should instead be cleaning up the existing beach resort destinations like Phu Quoc, which is a total mess with trash in the water." Pascal Visage "Not only is this going to displace generational families who have lived and worked there for centuries but it's going to destroy the mangroves and homes of countless species. We all know that the bulldozing will be done soon and then not a single brick will be laid for decades. Can we please, please finish the projects along the coast in Binh Thuan, Ba Ria-Vung Tau etc as well as inside HCMC like Thu Thiem before anything is done here? It's just not needed and blow anyone … [Read more...] about Turning HCMC’s Can Gio into resort town is ambitious
