The Consular Club of Ho Chi Minh City (Consular Club HCMC) hosted a fundraising dinner in the city on Saturday evening to raise funds for disadvantaged children, minority girls, and needy people in southern Vietnam. The Consular Club Fundraising Dinner 2023, an annual event with the ‘Stronger Together’ theme, took place at Continental Saigon Hotel in the city’s downtown District 1, attracting representatives from 19 countries, diplomatic missions, and business communities. The funds raised from the party, along with the proceeds from the auction of various items, including paintings and wines, will be donated to three charities, including Planète Enfants & Développement (PE&D), a French non-governmental organization (NGO) founded in 1984 to protect children from violence and exploitation and create conditions conducive to their well-being and development. 1 more monkeypox case reported in Ho Chi Minh City
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health confirmed on Sunday that the city had detected one more case of monkeypox, an illness caused by the monkeypox virus, taking the total to four in the city. Meanwhile, Vietnam has documented five monkeypox infections, with two of them having the source of transmission from outside of the country. The newly-discovered monkeypox patient was identified as a resident of the city’s outlying district of Binh Chanh. The patient has recently neither come into contact with foreigners nor traveled abroad. A 34-year-old man went to the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital of Dermato Venereology for a medical check-up on Thursday due to his suspected symptoms of the disease. The hospital took his sample and sent it to the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City for testing. The resulted showed a day later that he tested positive for the monkeypox virus, so he has been put under quarantine for treatment. ‘Pho’ becomes popular dish among Japanese in Vietnam
Japanese prefer soups, so it is not surprising when pho becomes a popular dish among the Japanese community in Vietnam. Hiroe K. from Tokyo had lived in Hanoi for years before moving to Ho Chi Minh City. In Hanoi, she did not often eat out but she chose pho whenever she had a chance. Number of foreign tourists to Vietnam nears 9 million in nine months

(Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – Around 8.9 million foreign tourists travelled to Vietnam in the first nine months of this year, a 4.7-fold increase compared to the figure of the same period last year, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO). However, the figure was equal to 69% of the number in the same period of 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. In September alone, the country welcomed more than 1 million foreign visitors, down 13.4% month-on-month. In the January-September period, 87.5% of foreign tourists chose to travel to Vietnam by air, 11.8% by road, and the remainders by sea. Revenue from accommodation and catering services in this period rose by 16%, and earnings from travel and tourism services surged by 47.7% year-on-year. HCMC shophouse rents plunge 30% amid low demand
Lan in District 1 has recently rented her shophouse for VND65 million a month, down 26% from before Covid-19, after having left it deserted for two months when she was unable to find a tenant. "If I do not lower the price, both renters and I will face difficulties. I will not have tenants, while would-be renters will not have enough resources to resume their business." The road where her shophouse is located, Le Thi Rieng, used to be filled with hair salons, nail spas and cosmetics stores. But it now looks deserted as many businesses have shut down in the last three years. On another District 1 road, Cach Mang Thang Tam, a shophouse which was rented for VND200 million ($8,228) a month before the pandemic is now being leased for VND130 million, a 35% drop.
