Unique patterns on traditional clothes of ethnic minority people

To paint patterns on traditional costumes, Dao Tien people can use waxes from many types of bees. However, waxes from ong khoai (apis dorsata) still bring the highest efficiency. Pattern painting techniques of Dao Tien people showed that they have a rich and delicate knowledge and live in harmony with nature. Beeswaxes are cooked several times to get the essence. Rustic kits are made up of materials found in nature. Beeswaxes are heated to paint on Dao Tien's clothes. A Dao Tien woman carefully prints the beeswax under a traditional method. Vietnamese woman produces reusable sanitary napkins to protect environment

A young Vietnamese woman has initiated a project that manufactures reusable sanitary pads in an effort to reduce the amount of garbage dumped every day. Bui Thi Minh Ngoc established a project called Green Lady Vietnam in 2017 that has produced cloth menstrual pads – items that have started to be used in America, Europe, India, Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam’s neighbors Cambodia, the Philippines and Thailand. “An average woman uses up to 10,000 disposable sanitary towels during her entire life. But a standard sanitary towel decomposes as slowly as four plastic bags,” Ngoc, 25, said. She was motivated by the desire to offer sanitary pads made completely of cloth that are tailored to Vietnamese women. Often working ten to twelve hours a day, she has spent a large part of her time being employed full-time and devoting several hours of the day to plans to develop her own business. She had a hard time finding suitable cloth for eco-friendly, safe sanitary napkins. “The fabric has to be naturally made, absorbent, easily washable and quick-drying,” she said. She traveled to cloth-making villages on the outskirts of Hanoi in the hope of getting good enough fabric but the effort failed. Her mother, who has enthusiastically supported her, came to the daughter’s rescue by buying the material she needs and finding workers for the Green Lady Vietnam project. Ngoc’s decision to embark on the undertaking encountered dissuasion from a number of friends and people with knowledge of the menstrual napkin industry. “Many people told me cloth sanitary pads are a backward step away from modern life, as they cause inconvenience and would hardly sell well,” she recalled. She has remained undaunted although she was at times uncertain about whether expanding the project would generate any success. She found a way out by maintaining sanitary pad production while running courses on eco-friendly …

Wasting food: sign of a thoughtless society

Luu Dinh Long On every occasion that involves eating, people have the tendency to order more food than needed, and when eating at someone's home, the hosts usually offer as much food as possible to prove how hospitable they are.On festive occasions, the offerings made to ancestors are always excessive. Often they cannot be eaten after spending hours next to the burning incense. Besides, we have other food coming straight from the kitchen that is much more delicious.I have complained to my mother more than once about cooking too much food for offerings during the Lunar New Year since our family is small. But that would change nothing because my mother would do exactly the same the next year.I personally do not like weddings because I repeatedly see for myself how much food is wasted because too many dishes are served and not many people really enjoy them.Women, with all their makeup and beautiful clothes, do not want to spend too much time on food, while men are too busy drinking beer. As a result, weddings are where people waste food the most."This is to safeguard our reputation [of being hospitable]," "This is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion," "Just relaxed..." People always have reasons for why they want lots of food at a feast, and not many seem to agree that wasting food is unconscionable. For every 10 tons of waste produced in Vietnam, five to eight tons are biodegradable organic waste, most of it food, according to a World Bank estimate.‘The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World,’ a report released in July 2020 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, estimated that almost 690 million people went hungry in 2019, 10 million more than in 2018 and nearly 60 million more than in 2014.Across the planet, the report forecast, the Covid-19 pandemic could tip over 130 million more people into chronic hunger by the end of 2020.It also said high costs and low affordability mean billions of others could not eat healthy or …
