The Hanoi Times - In May and June 2009, a number of Vietnam's tourism's major markets conducted through travel companies saw a 70 percent decrease in the number of tourists. In recent years, the Asian markets have still played an important role for Vietnam's tourism. Among the top 10 markets for the number of foreign tourists to Vietnam, the six most popular markets are the Republic of Korea (RoK), Japan, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Taipei (China). However, the spread of A/H1N1 flu over the past two months hugely affected the local tourism market with a sharp decrease in the number of tourists from some major markets in Asia. The Japanese market saw a 70 percent decrease in the number of tourists to Vietnam compared to the same period last year. At present, travel companies can not forecast how many Japanese tourists will come to Vietnam in July because Japanese often register tours two or three months in advance. An expansion of a currency swap agreement among Asian countries will be discussed by finance ministers meeting this weekend but a deal may not be signed until May, a senior Thai official said Saturday. The American Broadcasting Company (ABC) has inked an agreement with authorities in Vietnam to feature Son Doong Cave – the world’s largest – in its "Good Morning America" program in May. Representatives from ABC recently signed a deal with the People’s Committee in the central Vietnamese province of Quang Binh to broadcast a show featuring Son Doong Cave and En Cave in the program. Both the caves are located in the province’s UNESCO-recognized Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. The two are about two kilometers away from each other. The show on the two caves is expected to air in May this year. Oxalis, a local tour operator, which is licensed by the provincial authorities to offer tourist services to Son Doong Cave, is poised to join an ABC team to survey the two caves next week.
