However, while Vietnam’s gross domestic product (GDP) reached more than 7% last year, the highest official interest rate for less than six-month deposits was only 5%, way lower than the economic growth. Deposits of six months or longer terms was not much higher, only 6 – 7%. That means bank deposits were far less attractive. Basically, an investment channel becomes luring only when its rate of return is higher or at least equal to the GDP growth.
