Photo courtesy of the producer The channel, Tình Ca Bắc Sơn - Tập Đoàn An Nông (Bac Son’s love songs - An Nong Group), includes many works portraying southern people and their culture by artist Bac Son. Many documents and articles on the artist’s life and career are also featured. On the channel, music lovers can search Bac Son’s works arranged by topics by using key words. “Through YouTube, we hope fans, singers, composers and music producers can work together to introduce Vietnamese music and musician-author Bac Son in particular,” said theatre actress-singer Bich Thuy, one of the channel’s producers. She and her family have encouraged Bac Son’s fans at home and abroad to send information and materials to promote the late composer’s music on YouTube. Musician-author Bac Son (whose real name Truong Van Khue) was born in 1931 in Dong Nai Province. He began his writing career in 1952 when he was a teacher. In 1977, he became familiar with folk tunes that feature his love for the south. Communal house: a symbol of Vietnamese religion and culture

The Hanoitimes - Communal house is a typical architecture of Vietnam showcasing the rich spiritual life of the local people. Everywhere in Vietnam, from the city to the countryside, especially in villages, a communal house is a familiar image as an indispensable part of the people’s life. Communal house is considered as a symbol of culture, spirit and religion of Vietnamese. Through thousands of years in the history until today, each communal house usually has three main features. Firstly, it is the worshiping place of the Tutelary God of a village, the guardian of the village. The Tutelary God can be a natural god such as God of the mountain, God of the river, God of the sea or someone or something specific depending on the belief of each place, like God of tree or God of stone and so on. The deity can also be national heroes who contributed an important part to the building and independence of the country or local ones who helped found and develop the village. The diversified deities worshiped in the communal houses shows a rich spiritual life of the local people, which combines the power of mother nature veneration (typical of wet rice culture) and the ancestor beliefs of respecting the contribution of national heroes under some influence of Buddhism and Confucianism. Secondly, it is the administrative “head office” of a village, where important affairs like issuing regular, paying tax, handling court cases, calling for conscription, and so on took place. VIETNAM NEWS HEADLINES MARCH 9

No new COVID-19 infections logged on March 9 morning Vietnam reported no new COVID-19 cases in the past 12 hours to 6:00 am on March 9, according to the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control. The country recorded 1,586 domestically-transmitted infections, including 893 cases since the latest outbreak began on January 27. As many as 45,219 people who came in close contact with COVID-19 patients or arrived from pandemic-hit areas are under quarantine nationwide, including 506 in hospitals, 14,266 in other quarantine sites, and 30,446 at home. Among the patients under treatment, 65 have tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 once, 57 twice, and 137 thrice. The Treatment Sub-committee said that 1,920 patients have been declared to be clear of the coronavirus so far. Vietnam launched its COVID-19 vaccination programme on March 8, with healthcare workers being first in the queue. They received AstraZeneca vaccine shots, which was granted the Emergency Use Listing by the World Health Organisation for active immunisation to prevent COVID-19 in individuals aged from 18. In a bid to live safely with the pandemic, people should strictly follow the Ministry of Health’s 5K message: khau trang (facemask), khu khuan (disinfection), khoang cach (distance), khong tu tap (no gathering) and khai bao y te (health declaration)./. Dozens of illegal immigrants found in border provinces Police in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang have detected tens of Chinese citizens illegally entering Vietnam. The provincial steering committee for COVID-19 prevention and control said on March 8 that 34 illegal Chinese immigrants had been sent to concentrated quarantine facilities and tested for COVID-19. Further investigation and contact tracing are underway. Local authorities and residents were asked to stay vigilant and follow pandemic preventive measures.
