The FTC accused Amazon, a company started in a garage in 1994 and today worth $1.3 trillion, of fighting efforts by sellers on its online marketplace to offer products more cheaply on other platforms. Amazon forces sellers to use its warehouses and delivery services, inflating costs for consumers and sellers, the FTC said. Amazon is a monopoly and misuses its powers, according to the FTC, which quotes a seller as saying: "We have nowhere else to go and Amazon knows it." The lawsuit had been expected after years of complaints that Amazon.com and other tech giants abused their dominance of search, social media and online retailing to become gatekeepers on the most profitable aspects of the internet. The need to take action against Big Tech has been one of the few ideas that Democrats and Republicans have agreed on, and the FTC chief has been particularly concerned about Amazon's power. The lawsuit, which was joined by 17 state attorneys general, follows a four-year investigation … [Read more...] about Amazon faces landmark monopoly lawsuit by FTC

Brazil sets up task force for unprecedented drought in Amazon: minister
BRASILIA -- Brazil's government is preparing a task force to provide emergency assistance to inhabitants in the Amazon region hit by a severe drought that has impacted the rivers that are their life support, Environment Minister Marina Silva said. Low river levels and hotter waters have killed masses of fish seen floating on river surfaces, contaminating the drinking water, she said. Brazil's Environment Minister Marina Silva attends an interview with Reuters in Brasilia, Brazil March 24, 2023. Photo: Reuters "We have a very worrying situation. This record drought has disrupted river transport routes threatening food and water shortages, and a large fish mortality is already beginning," she told Reuters in an interview. Death of dolphins in Amazon linked to severe drought, heat
MANAUS -- The carcasses of 120 river dolphins have been found floating in a tributary of the Amazon River over the last week in circumstances that experts suspect were caused by severe drought and heat. Low river levels during a severe drought have heated water in stretches to temperatures that are intolerable for the dolphins, researchers believe. Thousands of fish have died recently on Amazon rivers due to a lack of oxygen in the water. Researchers from the Mamiraua Institute for Sustainable Development retrieve dead dolphins from the Tefe lake effluent of the Solimoes river that has been affected by the high temperatures and drought in Tefe, Amazonas state, Brazil, October 2, 2023. Photo: Reuters The Amazon river dolphins, many of a striking pink color, are a unique freshwater species found only in the rivers of South America and are one of a handful of freshwater dolphin species left in the world. 6,600 people lost $354M to real estate developer Tan Hoang Minh’s bond scam: police
Dung, along with his son Do Hoang Viet, vice director of Tan Hoang Minh, and 13 others on Friday were recommended by the investigative police department under the Ministry of Public Security to be charged with obtaining property by fraud. Tan Hoang Minh, with an authorized capital of VND10 trillion, was established by Dung in 1993. To operate as a corporation, Dung either established or bought the stakes of 45 companies, then got people to act as their legal representatives. The company plunged into financial troubles in 2021 and, by January 2022, it owed the bank around VND20 trillion, not including the eight bond packages that the company had issued since 2021. Dung then instructed his son Do Hoang Viet to find ways to mobilize capital for the corporation, and the chosen method was the issuance of separate business bonds. Instead of using Tan Hoang Minh's legal status to issue bonds, the company's subsidiary firms were used instead. Authorities accused Tan Hoang Minh of … [Read more...] about 6,600 people lost $354M to real estate developer Tan Hoang Minh’s bond scam: police

Vietnam open Asian Games football campaign with Mongolia victory
Vietnam had a good start in men’s football at the 19th Asian Games tournament in China with a 4-2 victory against Mongolia in their opening match in Hangzhou on Tuesday. Vietnam applied pressure against their opponents right from the outset of the game and netted an early goal in the third minute. Capitalizing on a well-executed long pass from his teammate, Nguyen Quoc Viet took advantage of a Mongolian defender’s error to break free and took a shot that ultimately bested goalkeeper Batmagnai Sereekhuu. The momentum then continued to strongly favor Vietnam. In the 31st minute, Quoc Viet’s powerful long-range shot from over 22 meters away sent the ball directly into the goal, leaving goalkeeper Batmagnai Sereekhuu with no opportunity to make a save, extending Vietnam’s lead to 2-0. Just four minutes later, Mongolia managed their first significant chance when midfielder Nergui Sainbuyan unleashed an impressive long-range shot from beyond the penalty area. Working with American business partners requires understanding their way of thinking
In January 2000, we established our first branch in San Jose, California, the heart of Silicon Valley. The director of that branch was a patriotic diasporic Vietnamese. But the American Dream did not come true for us. After merely one year of operations, FPT USA had to temporarily stop operating due to a lack of customers. We tried everything, with different people attempting to take the reigns of business development. From a Vietnamese expat to a graduate from prestigious MBA programs. What we received were critics, portraying our managers as "delusional about our corporate capability" and our programmers "weak in both expertise and language skills." It was a total failure. No one cared about a nameless company from Vietnam, a country only known then for the prolonged war. One of our then-potential customers was surprised to learn that it only took one hour to fly from Hanoi to Bangkok. He could not imagine the locations were so close, despite his own flying to Bangkok quite … [Read more...] about Working with American business partners requires understanding their way of thinking
