‘Copycat’ mass shootings becoming deadlier, experts warn after New York attack
An 18-year-old white man suspected of fatally shooting 10 people in a Black neighborhood in Buffalo, New York, appears to be the latest in a line of "copycat" gunmen carrying out deadlier mass shootings inspired by previous attackers, experts warned on Sunday. Payton Gendron, who surrendered to police on Saturday after the attack, apparently publicized a racist manifesto on the internet and broadcast the attack in real time on social media platform Twitch, a live video service owned by Amazon.com. Authorities called the mass killing an act of "racially motivated violent extremism." Experts say the trend of mostly young white men being inspired by previous racist gun massacres is on the rise, citing recent mass shootings, including the 2015 attack at a Black church in Charleston, South Carolina, a 2018 shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh and a 2019 attack at a Walmart in an Hispanic neighborhood of El Paso. Adam Lankford, a criminology professor at the University of Alabama, … [Read more...] about ‘Copycat’ mass shootings becoming deadlier, experts warn after New York attack

Explainer: Why monkeypox cases are rising in Europe
A handful of cases of monkeypox have now been reported or are suspected in the United Kingdom, Portugal and Spain. The outbreaks are raising alarm because the disease mostly occurs in west and central Africa, and only very occasionally spreads elsewhere. Here's what scientists know so far. 'Highly unusual' Monkeypox is a virus that causes fever symptoms as well as a distinctive bumpy rash. It is usually mild, although there are two main strains: the Congo strain, which is more severe – with up to 10% mortality – and the West African strain, which has a fatality rate of more like 1% of cases. The UK cases are least have been reported as the West African strain. "Historically, there have been very few cases exported. It has only happened eight times in the past before this year," said Jimmy Whitworth, a professor of international public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who said it was "highly unusual". Portugal has logged five confirmed cases, … [Read more...] about Explainer: Why monkeypox cases are rising in Europe
Urgent action needed on primate protection
An individual grey-shanked douc langur (Pygathrix cinerea), one of the world’s 25 Critically Endangered primates, is found living in a forest of Quang Nam Province. (Photo courtesy of Ai Tam) Hanoi (VNS/VNA) - Since the Government’s decision on action plan for the protection of the primate species in Vietnam was issued in 2017, a total of 684 endangered douc langurs , including 86 grey-shanked douc langurs (Pygathrix cinerea), one of the world’s 25 Critically Endangered primates , have been captured by rangers and authorities in 80 illegal hunting and wildlife trafficking cases. However, a report by the ENV, an NGO focused on wildlife protection, showed that only 30 per cent of total poaching violations in Vietnam were discovered, while 70 per cent were unknown, meaning that the number of the langurs hunted in the forest was unclear. Biologists, conservationists and experts shared the report at a conference on the conservation activities on endangered primates … [Read more...] about Urgent action needed on primate protection
Vietnam Airlines suffers $113mn Q1 loss despite revenue surge
National carrier Vietnam Airlines remained in the red in the first quarter of this year, with losses of nearly US$113 million, despite its revenue rising to a two-year high. The airline posted a loss of VND2.621 trillion ($112.9 million) over the first three months of 2022, according to its Q1 consolidated financial statements issued on Friday. The loss was recorded even though the flag carrier logged revenue of more than VND11.6 trillion ($500 million) in the period, up 55 percent year on year, the highest performance since the second quarter of 2020, when COVID-19 began to severely affect Vietnam’s aviation industry. The impressive revenue failed to cover the total cost that was higher than expected, leading to the firm’s ninth consecutive quarterly loss, the carrier said. Vietnam Airlines’ fuel expense in the quarter was VND465 billion ($20 million) more than projected given rising world oil prices, VnExpress cited the company as saying. The Q1 result has brought the … [Read more...] about Vietnam Airlines suffers $113mn Q1 loss despite revenue surge
