Mekong Delta floods to be below normal this year: authorities
Rice fields in Cao Lanh district of the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap province. (Photo: VNA) HCM City (VNS/VNA) - The Mekong Delta is expected to have less flooding than normal this year, according to the Directorate of Water Resources. The delta, the country largest producer of rice, fruits and seafood, is normally flooded in the Mekong’s upstream areas, and this fertilises the soil as sediments are deposited and brings river creatures into farms. The floods are expected to peak at 3.5-3.7m at the Tan Chau Station in An Giang province in October, the directorate said. They are estimated to reach 3 metres by the end of this month, but will not affect the cultivation the autumn-winter crop. However, the high tides are expected to be high this year and flood low-lying areas in the delta’s central and coastal areas, especially when the tides occur at the same time as heavy rains. The flooding is now low and does not affect agriculture production or daily life. … [Read more...] about Mekong Delta floods to be below normal this year: authorities

‘Ech’ an unFROGgettable experience in Ho Chi Minh City
Editor’s note: Jordy Comes Alive, from the U.S., has lived in Ho Chi Minh City for three years and become a big fan of local food after spending time wandering around local alleys and markets to discover the culinary scene. His piece has been titled, subtitled, and edited by Tuoi Tre News . I’ve noticed people can get a little jumpy when you talk about eating frogs. Not me though, I always leap at the opportunity. When it comes to eating frog, I’m mainly familiar with it being batter-fried like chicken. Truth be told and I know this sounds strange to some but I honestly prefer fried frog over fried chicken on any given day. Enjoying fried frog is the same kind of eating sensation as with fried chicken, only the meat has a cleaner taste (sans the flavor of fowl), and the white frog flesh is juicy with a buttery finish. 'Water chicken,' as funny as the term is, croaks partially true. I started thinking maybe it’s time I paddle my way to other ponds to broaden my … [Read more...] about ‘Ech’ an unFROGgettable experience in Ho Chi Minh City

Vietnam’s first refinery calls for upgrade incentives
The plant’s expansion was approved in December 2014 but was delayed by issues in the design, appraisal and approval process, and capital mobilization. Therefore, Petrovietnam and Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical (BSR), its operator, have sought official permission to adjust the scale, required technology and progress of the upgrade. Capacity was adjusted down to 171,000 barrels a day from 192,000, and investment was down by $0.54 million to $1.26 million. The BSR, expansion investor, called for incentives including the ability to negotiate and extend contracts with technology providers and to fast-track some processes. It also asked for a preferential corporate income tax rate of 10% in 30 years upon completion; a four-year tax exemption since making profits; a 50% tax cut in the next nine years; and an extension on the exemption of petroleum import tax to 2028. This would help Dung Quat operate more equally with Nghi Son Refinery, Vietnam’s latest and biggest refinery, it … [Read more...] about Vietnam’s first refinery calls for upgrade incentives
