A Jordanian officer shot dead two U.S. government security contractors, a South African trainer and two Jordanians at a U.S.-funded police training facility near Amman on Monday before being killed in a shootout, Jordanian authorities said. U.S. President Barack Obama said he was treating very seriously the attack at the King Abdullah Training Centre, in which three Jordanians and one Lebanese citizen were wounded, and a full investigation was under way. A senior Jordanian official told Reuters the gunman was a police captain, and authorities identified him as Anwar Abu Zeid. There was no immediate word on the motive for the attack. Jordan is a staunch U.S. ally in the Washington-led campaign against Islamic State militants who hold large areas of neighbouring Syria and Iraq, a position Jordanian officials say leaves the kingdom vulnerable to jihadist attacks. "This incident sadly does not come as a surprise, as the threat of Islamist terrorism has only increased in the region … [Read more...] about Jordanian officer fatally shoots two Americans, S.African at security training site
The Chinese howling about how Westerners are portraying Saturday night's horrific slaughter at the Kunming train station have a point: It's pretty hard not to call an unprovoked attack by 10 black-clad, sword-wielding assailants on a crowd of innocent civilians -- in which 29 victims died and 143 were wounded -- anything but a terrorist attack. I'll wager that a similar massacre in, say, a Tucson, Arizona, mall would not have been tut-tutted as a "terrible and senseless act of violence," which is how a U.S. embassy statement described the Kunming tragedy. Still, Chinese might want to think twice before they start adopting the U.S.'s politically charged, post-Sept. 11 enthusiasm for labeling terrorists and terror attacks. Painting with a broad brush hasn't helped Beijing quell an upsurge of violence in restive Xinjiang province thus far, and it isn't likely to solve the problem at hand. Authorities were quick to blame Muslim Uighur separatists from Xinjiang for the Kunming attack. … [Read more...] about Was Chinese train massacre ‘terrorism’?
A fight between a teacher and his students at a high school in central Vietnam last month has stirred an online debate in which one side criticizes the educator, who repeatedly slapped the students' faces for making noise in the classroom before they hit back, while the other condemns the kids' misbehavior. The incident happened at Nguyen Hue High School, located in the central province of Binh Dinh, on January 21 when the students seen in the footage were making noise in class, Quach Nguyen Huyen Tran, the school's principal, told Tuoi Tre on Tuesday. The teacher, identified as 23-year-old Tran Anh Tuan who was teaching 11th-grade chemistry to class 11A1, then ordered the two students, Nguyen Phuc Nghia and Nguyen Thanh Long, to his teaching podium to reprimand them, according to the principal. Tuan, a fresh graduate who has been teaching at Nguyen Hue since 2013, was so angry that he beat the two on the spot, Tran said. In the clip, Tuan is seen slapping Nghia on his … [Read more...] about Teacher-students scuffle provokes another online brawl in Vietnam
VOLGOGRAD, Russia - A suicide attacker set off a bomb in the entrance hall of a Russian train station on Sunday, investigators said, killing at least 16 people in the second deadly attack within three days as Russia prepares to host the Winter Olympics. Islamist militants in the North Caucasus have carried out a long string of attacks since President Vladimir Putin came to power in 2000. They now confront him with his biggest security challenge, threatening to disrupt the Olympics that start in the Black Sea resort of Sochi in 40 days. Footage shown on TV captured the moment of the blast, as a massive orange fireball filled the hall of the stately, colonnaded station and clouds of grey smoke poured out of shattered windows. The station - a Stalinesque architectural monument with a clocktower and spire topped by a Soviet-style star - was busier than usual, with people travelling home for the New Year, one of the main holidays in Russia. "People were lying on the ground, … [Read more...] about Suicide bomber kills at least 16 at Russian train station
