Early summer rain alleviates saltwater in Hau Giang A heavy rain that lasted for one hour on May 9 has helped ease the after-effects of saline intrusion in many parts of the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang. The rain came as a release after nearly half a month the province bears the brunt of the worst saltwater intrusion in history. In early May, the province had to declare an emergency situation due to high salinity in Vi Thanh City, Long My town and the districts of Long My and Vi Thuy. As of early May, the serious situation caused damage worth 13 billion VND (585,000 USD) in Hau Giang. According to Truong Canh Tuyen, Chairman of the provincial People's Committee, if the situation continues to get worst, the province will lose another 3,000 hectares of summer-autumn paddies by May's end. Red Cross activities integrated into climate change response More than 15,000 households in 14 cities and provinces who announced natural disaster status, have received initial support from the Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRC). Vice President of the VRC Central Committee Tran Thi Hong An told an April 27-28 event, that by April 24, 2016, the organisation had mobilised over 25 billion VND (1.1 million USD) donated by people from all walks of life to aid natural disaster victims. The conference, jointly held by the VRC, the German Red Cross (GRC) and the VRC's chapter in Quang Binh province, aims to assess the risks and impacts of climate change and how red cross activities can work in response to climate change. As part of the GRC-funded "Community-based disaster risk management" project, the event is due to create an opportunity for the VRC, and relevant agencies, to promote the integration of climate change adaptation into the management of risks and disasters in Vietnam. Four dead, five missing after storm Nari
Four dead, two missing in aftermath of Storm 'Nari' Cyclonic storm Nari, the 11 th of its kind to hit Vietnam this year, killed at least four people and left five others missing in the central region, the National Committee for Search and Rescue has reported. The storm, which hit land on October 15, also injured 69 people in Quang Nam, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Ngai, Quang Tri and Nghe An provinces and Da Nang city, as waters rose and houses and trees were pulled down. The tropical storm, packing maximum winds of 102 kph, sunk 41 ships in Quang Nam and Quang Ngai, destroyed over 16,300 houses, unroofed 110 schools and damaged 662 ha rice and farming land in the region. The armed forces mobilised over 8,700 soldiers and volunteers to help local residents keep safe during the storm. Four dead, two missing in aftermath of Storm 'Nari' Four people are reported dead, two still missing and dozens injured cross the Central Provinces from night of October 14 until the morning of October 15, with Storm 'Nari' lashing at wind speeds of level 14-15. The Storm destroyed houses, uprooted trees, flattened electric poles along streets and left untold devastation behind. The Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control in the Central Provinces and Central Highlands announced the human casualties took place in Quang Nam and Thua Thien-Hue Provinces. Rainfall upto 150-300mm caused flooding in many parts of the Central Provinces and Northern Central Highlands, including Ly Son Islands (Quang Ngai), Bach Ma (Hue), Tam Ky (Quang Nam). Provinces from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien-Hue saw moderate to heavy rain.
