Singers say they are ‘victims’ at businesswoman’s trial
Singer Vy Oanh. Photo from Oanh's Instagram Hang, the general director of the Dai Nam Joint Stock Company, is set to stand trial at the Ho Chi Minh City’s People’s Court on Thursday, after she was arrested by Ho Chi Minh City police in March last year for "abusing democratic freedoms to infringe upon the interests of the State, and the lawful rights and interests of organizations and/or citizens." The two singers claimed that Hang’s words and behaviors had directly harmed their reputations, causing them mental and physical repercussions. Thus, they argued, they were qualified to be considered "victims" in the case, according to the Criminal Procedure Code. If the court approves their requests, the singers will have many rights that "relevant parties" do not enjoy, including the right to ask the court to consider the defendant's particular behavior and punishment, as well as appealing against the defendant’s conviction. The court has not announced a decision on the singers’ … [Read more...] about Singers say they are ‘victims’ at businesswoman’s trial

US employers to see biggest healthcare cost jump in a decade in 2024
Benefit consultants from Mercer, Aon and Willis Towers Watson see employer healthcare costs jumping 5.4% to 8.5% in 2024 due to medical inflation, soaring demand for costly weight-loss drugs and wider availability of high-priced gene therapies. A survey conducted by Mercer, a unit of Marsh McLennan, found over two thirds of employers either do not plan to shift any cost increase to their staff or will pass on less than the expected rise in 2024. "They don't want to add more financial stress on employees who are also coping with inflation, especially in this time where they're really relying on their health benefits as a way to keep employees working for them," said Beth Umland, Mercer's director of health & benefits research. U.S. consumer prices accelerated 3.7% in the 12 months through August, down from a peak of 9.1% in June last year. However, medical cost increases usually lag general inflation as contracts between insurers and hospitals for the prices of procedures are … [Read more...] about US employers to see biggest healthcare cost jump in a decade in 2024

Invasive species on the menu at London restaurant
The idea behind several "invasive species supper clubs", the last of which was served on Tuesday at "zero waste" Silo restaurant in east London, is to "creatively popularize species that are detrimental to the environment", chef Douglas McMaster, who runs the establishment, told AFP . The omnipresent grey squirrels, signal crayfish and Japanese knotweed are all "forces of destruction" that squeeze out local populations, but all are edible and "delicious", he added. The invaders are the subject of a recently published report under the aegis of the UN, which gave rise to calls from experts to "wake up" to the "scourge". A crayfish dish served at Silo, a zero-waste restaurant in London. Photo by AFP/Daniel Leal McMaster would like a legitimate supply chain and for the species to become "an accessible resource" for chefs.
