About 0.73 million metric tons of plastic waste was discharged into the ocean of Vietnam in 2022, the World Bank data showed. The current problem that Vietnam needs to solve when it comes to developing the circular economy is how to turn that huge amount of plastic waste into economic resources. The Embassies of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, in collaboration with the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, organized the Nordic Day 2023 with the theme ‘Green Nordic Solutions for Circular Economy and Waste Management’ on Wednesday and Thursday. This is the fifth time the event has been held since 2018. Trade recovers strongly since reopening
A year since Vietnam reopened after a global pandemic, the country has seen trade recovering strongly. The decision, according to economists and policymakers, was a necessity to unshackle trade and industries after a prolonged period of time in which hundreds of factories were forced to close down or reduce production capacity in compliance with strong social distancing rules. The reopening, which was made possible with a nationwide vaccination program, has allowed the supply chain to come back, giving a much-needed boost to industries and trade as well as to the country's export sector. Than Duc Viet, General Director of May 10, one of the country's largest textile companies, said strong social distancing measures during the pandemic significantly disrupted the company's operation and threatened its ability to maintain production at times. He said the worst part of it was not knowing when his factory's doors could be closed. "Our approach during the pandemic was to move as … [Read more...] about Trade recovers strongly since reopening

Asian markets extend global rally as banking sector fears ease
Asian markets rose Friday, tracking New York and European equities, as traders welcomed multi-billion-dollar shows of support for troubled banks aimed at soothing concerns about contagion in the sector. A rollercoaster week was on course to end on a positive note after several Wall Street titans including JP Morgan, Bank of America and Citigroup stumped up $30 billion to deposit into troubled First Republic. The move came as investors feared the lender could suffer a run of withdrawals by customers worried it would follow Silicon Valley bank and Signature Bank, which went under last week and fuelled fears of another financial crisis. "The actions of America's largest banks reflect their confidence in the country's banking system," the group of 11 banks said of a plan that was coordinated by US regulators. Earlier, European giant Credit Suisse said it would borrow nearly $54 billion made available by the Swiss central bank to "support" the group. Markets welcomed the measures, … [Read more...] about Asian markets extend global rally as banking sector fears ease

The potential ramifications of US banking collapse
How did a bank ranking on the list of American Best Banks for five straight years collapse in your viewpoint? Professor Andreas Stoffers, country director of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Vietnam Just before March 10, Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) was the 16th largest in the US. It had taken four decades to build and its parent company SVB Financial Group. However, it took only 36 hours to completely dismantle. SVB was forced to sell assets at a loss to pay for withdrawals from venture capital funds and tech startups. However, this led to massive withdrawals, while SVB was facing many difficulties, which left it unable to pay its debts, leading to bankruptcy on March 10. Dark memories of the 2008 financial crisis returned and this crisis did reach other banks in the US as well. Many questions remain unanswered, such as why bonuses were still being paid to management shortly before the bank collapsed and why the CEO was still gold-plating his shares in January … [Read more...] about The potential ramifications of US banking collapse
