The Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange Thursday rallied for the second straight day on the back of some smart buying in large caps. The VN-Index closed at 246.68, up 2.32 points and 0.95 percent. Of its 178 members, 115 gained and 29 receded as 8.4 million shares were traded. â€œMany investors expect share prices to rise as companies approach the shareholder-meeting season in which business strategies and dividend plans will be announced,â€ Hoang Thach Lan, chief analyst at Ho Chi Minh City-based SME Securities Co. â€œSo, some of them have increased buying to be ahead of a possible rebound. â€œHowever, the recent gains on the two stock markets may not last long as there are still no clear signs of economic recovery. HSBC says it may be time to buy stock (05-09-2007) HA NOI — HSBC analysts were upbeat on Vietnamese equities in their recent strategy report, indicating stock prices have returned to more realistic levels. "After falling 24 per cent from its high in March, the VN-Index has returned to our year-end target of 900, which we set in January, when the index was 750, and have not changed since. This makes the Vietnamese equity market look interesting again," analysts wrote in the August 29 report, which was just released to the public this weekend. They argued economic fundamentals remain strong, which has been a driver behind corporate earnings growth in the first half of the year. Vietnam's benchmark stock market increased Monday, as investors' confidence lifted slightly in the wake of data showing inflation had slowed, a local stock expert told Thanh Nien Daily. The VN-Index, which gauges the 155 leading companies and four closed-end funds listed on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HOSE), rose 5.18 points, or 1.2 percent, to close at 434.64. Earlier, the VN-Index decreased 60.4 points, or 12.3 percent, over six consecutive trading sessions between July 18 and 25.
